On completion of the course, the PhD candidate has achieved the following learning outcomes, defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

The PhD candidate

  • can critically assess different theories of and approaches to health and illness
  • can assess the usefulness and application of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research into health and illness
  • can assess the usefulness and application of biomedical and technological developments

Skills

The PhD candidate can

  • address complex theories of health and illness and challenge established knowledge in the health sciences and in his or her own discipline and/or profession

General competence

The PhD candidate can

  • identify relevant ethical and health policy issues
  • present and discuss research-based knowledge of health and illness
  • assess the need for new measures to promote health and prevent illness

Læringsutbytte

Work and teaching methods consist of lectures, seminars, and self-study. The outcomes of the seminars are presented and discussed in plenary sessions.

Innhold

  • Main features of the global aid industry : Actors and channels of finance; geographic and thematic destinations of aid; shifting aid paradigms; and critiques of aid
  • Norwegian aid in perspective : Features of public development policy from the 1980s and up to the present, in comparative perspective; the approach and work of select non-governmental organisations
  • New actors, interventions and partnerships : Policy coherence; advocacy and transnational activism; and corporate social responsibility
  • The politics of mediation: The ways in which main actors in the development enterprise present development challenges; their own work and contributions; and the debates this gives rise to

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

Individual home examination, to be submitted no more than two weeks after the end of the course, in which candidates discuss their own research projects from different perspectives of health and/or illness. Answer papers must consist of up to 3500 words.

One internal and one external examiner will assess the answer papers submitted by all candidates.

Vurderingsuttrykk

The course can also be offered to students who have been admitted to the “Health Science Research Programme, 60 ECTS”, by prior approval from the supervisor and based on given guidelines for the research programme.

Sensorordning

The exam is assessed by internal and external examiner/s.

Opptakskrav

The course is open to third-year Bachelor students in Development Studies at HiOA, and exchange students. Exchange students must have completed at least a one-year introductory course in Development Studies.
