Innledning
Central to the Specialisation in Music and Music Education is the relationship between music and learning in societies characterized by diversity and change. Throughout the course, students are expected to gain insight into central theoretical perspectives within the scholarly field of music education (subject didactics), and to develop research and development competence relevant to this field. Students are to become capable of producing new knowledge about how the field of practice, research and theory are working together in the development of the scholarly field, and to reflect critically on the role of music in schools. The specialisation also includes musical performance and working practically with music teaching approaches.
The course is open to international exchange students, and will be taught in English (or Norwegian, depending on needs according to the participants' language abilities).
Forkunnskapskrav
In addition to the admission requirements in the programme plan the student must have at least 60 ECTS Credits in Music and Music Education to attend this course.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
The main work forms are lectures, seminars, performance projects and supervision. The course requires substantial study of course literature.
Teaching Practice
Students who have been admitted to the programme on the basis of having completed three years of teacher education 1-7 og 5-10, will be offered ten days of teaching practice in the first year of the master programme. Students must in that case contact the Section for practical training in the faculty's administration when admitted to the master programme. The teaching practice will be carried out together with the students in the fourth year of the teacher education. See the teaching practice guide for teacher education 1-7/5-10 for further information.
Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter
Students taking the course as part of the full master programme are to submit an outline of 1800 words +/-10 % for their master project.
A part of the course is to work individually or in groups with musical performance, and the results of this work are to be presented in a concert at the end of the term. Each student must be involved in a musical repertoire lasting between 20 and 30 minutes. The musical repertoire - or the presentation of the repertoire - might be thematically linked to one or more core perspectives of the music specialization programme.
Course work requirements must be met within fixed deadlines. Students who, due to illness or other valid and documented reasons (such as a medical certificate), do not meet the work requirements within the fixed deadlines, may be given a new deadline, in each individual case given by the teacher.
The course work requirements are evaluated as -accepted- or -not accepted-. Students who get -not accepted- may submit a new version of the outline of the master project/present a musical repertoire twice. The new deadline is in each individual case given by the teacher.
Vurdering og eksamen
The exam consists of two parts:
- An individual, written work (essay) of a chosen theme in the course. The essay must be 6000 words +/- 10 %, and it will count 49 % of the final grade in this course.
- An individual oral exam of approx. 40 minutes that will count 51 % of the final grade in this course.
The student-s ability to draw lines, present perspectives and contrasts and to see coherences will be emphasized.
New/postponed exam
In case of failed exam or legal absence, the student can apply for a new or postponed exam. New or postponed exam is offered within a reasonable time span following the regular exam. The student is responsible for applying for a new exam within the time limits set by HiOA and the Faculty of Education and International Studies. Regulations for new or postponed examinations are available in Regulations relating to studies and examinations at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences. If the essay is evaluated as -Not passed- the student may hand in a revised version for the new exam.
Hjelpemidler ved eksamen
All kinds of examination support material is permitted.
Vurderingsuttrykk
A graded scale from A to E for passed and F for not passed will be used.
Sensorordning
Both the essay and the oral exam will be evaluated by an internal and external examiner. Both parts must be passed to get a final overall grade in the course.
