Schedule
  • Introduction

    Pathophysiology deals with how different diseases and injuries change the cells and tissue, which also lead to changes in the functions of the tissue, organs and body. The course focuses on disease processes and disease conditions that can cause acute partial or complete organ failure, and knowledge of relevant treatment.

  • Required preliminary courses

    Project examination, consisting of a group assignment with up to 7 students, based on a case with a health claim in the media. The assignment will include the levels of the EBP model. The assignment is submitted as a written paper of 1500 words (+/- 10 prosent) according to further specified criteria.;

    Each group decides whether their assignment is to be submitted in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

    Resit exam: If the assignment is given the grade fail, the group can submit a revised version once. ;

    If this attempt fails, the group is entitled to a third and final attempt. In a third attempt, the group must choose a new health claim and submit a new examination paper.;

  • Learning outcomes

    After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

    • can explain pathology, symptoms, signs, observations and treatment in patients with
    • diseases of the respiratory organs
    • cardiovascular diseases and circulatory disorders
    • diseases of the nervous system
    • can present knowledge of diabetes
    • can describe diseases of the digestive system
    • can explain disease manifestation in elderly people
    • can describe serious infections
    • can describe what cancer is and how cancer is treated
    • can describe the fundamental principles of hygiene and infection control

    Skills

    The student

    • can apply knowledge of pathological processes and types of treatment as a basis for understanding sick persons
    • can apply and disseminate knowledge about diseases of the musculoskeletal system
    • masters management of infectious material
    • can use knowledge of the discipline in a written presentation

    General competence

    The student

    • understands how disease is manifested through vital signs and symptoms
  • Teaching and learning methods

    Pass/Fail. The same grade is given for all students in the group.

  • Course requirements

    One external and one internal examiner will assess at least 10 percent of the assignments. To internal examiners will assess the remaining assignments. The external examiner’s assessment shall benefit all the students.;

  • Assessment

    Prior to the course, the students are recommended to go through the elements in "Startpakka" which focus on literature search, critical appraisal and use of references, see https://student.oslomet.no/startpakka

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    BIOB1060, ERGOB1060, FYB1060, RAB1060, SYKK1060, SYKP1060, TAB1060, FARB1060, PMED1060, ORI1060 overlap;100 %.

  • Grading scale

    Grade scale A-F.

  • Examiners

    All the exams are assessed by an external and an internal examiner.

  • Overlapping courses

    10 credits overlap with the course PARA1310 Pathology.
