MERG4100 The Knowledge Base for Occupation and Participation Course description

  • Introduction

    Language of instruction: Norwegian

    This course covers knowledge about circumstances that can promote and impede activity and participation throughout life. This includes individual circumstances, but also social challenges related to creating inclusive arenas in society. Working life is an important arena in society where these challenges come into play. The main focus of the course is to enable the students to find, compare and assess knowledge as a basis for the development of occupational therapy interventions. The students will conduct systematic literature searches, assess research literature critically and summarise knowledge in a thematic area that they decide the delimitations for themselves.

    The students can continue to work on topics from this course when they later take the course MAVIT4070 Research Design and Project Description.

  • Required preliminary courses

    The student must have been admitted to the Master’s Programme in Health Sciences and hold authorisation as an occupational therapist.

  • Learning outcomes

    Understanding how accounting choices influence the transparency, interpretability, and overall quality of financial information lies at the heart of this course, Valuation for Accountants. This course builds on foundational accounting principles to help students read, analyze, and interpret financial statements effectively. It bridges technical knowledge with real-world applications, enabling students to make informed decisions about investments, resource allocation, and business valuation. The course is ideal for students pursuing degrees in accounting, finance, business management, or related fields, aiming to build a strong foundation in financial statement analysis and valuation.

    Course Objectives:

    • Understand the accounting principles behind financial reporting
    • Understand the role and importance of financial statements in business decision-making
    • Analyze and interpret financial statements, including the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows
    • Learn to assess accounting and financial statements quality, and identify potential manipulation
    • Forecast financial performance and apply valuation methods for public and private firms
    • Explore strategic frameworks for evaluating business operations, including SWOT and competitive analysis
    • Examine how ESG performance impacts valuation and decision-making

    Language of instruction is English.

  • Teaching and learning methods

    The course will use varied, student-active work methods. The teaching is organised into two five-day sessions. Work and teaching methods include lectures, seminars, digital learning resources, assignments, group work, oral presentations and self-study. Throughout the course, students will work on a written assignment related to a topic of their choice. One intention of the assignment is to carry out a knowledge summary of topics that can later become the focus of the student’s master’s thesis. At the teaching sessions, the students will present their home assignments and receive feedback from fellow students and lecturers. The written assignments form the basis for the examination assignment.

  • Course requirements

    None.

  • Assessment

    An individual project examination in the form of an assignment that is developed during the course. Scope: Up to 3,500 words, excluding reference list.

    Resit examination: If the student fails the written assignment, he/she will be given one (1) opportunity to submit a reworked version.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    Learning approaches include lectures, in-class problem solving, class discussions, and group work.

  • Grading scale

    Pass/fail.

  • Examiners

    The following coursework requirements must have been approved for the student to take the exam:

    • Coursework 1: One written group assignment (maximum two pages)

    All required coursework must be completed and approved by the given deadline for the student to take the exam. If the coursework requirement has not been approved, the student will be given one opportunity to submit an improved version by a given deadline.
