    Knowledge

    The candidate:

    • can identify key elements of sustainable design and manufacturing as applied to energy systems
    • can explain the 6R (reuse, recover, recycle, redesign, reduce and remanufacturing) principle as applied to product lifecycle analysis
    • can solve relevant design problems using Design for X methodology
    • can develop holistic strategies for the circular and sustainable design.

    Skills:

    The candidate

    • can analyze the methods presented in the regulations, standards, and research papers for sustainable design and manufacturing
    • can conduct life cycle assessments of energy systems and identify opportunities for improvement
    • can analyze the environmental impact of energy systems and develop strategies for reducing waste and emissions
    • can use Fusion360 for designing and manufacturing components digitally
    • can perform research independently and document it in the form of a report following research ethics criteria
    • can assess the societal impact of design choice relevant to circular economy in engineering
    • can find relevant information in the literature, compare information sources critically and follow appropriate citation practices
    • can summarize the content of scientific articles and dissertations within the field of sustainable design and manufacturing.

    General Competence:

    The candidate

    • can justify decisions on design, process, and materials based on environmental, social, and economic impacts
    • can reflect upon the key issues, and conclusions related to sustainable design and manufacturing
    • can work independently and make informed decisions within the interdisciplinary projects requiring interaction between, engineering, society, and economy.
  • Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

Lectures, project work and group assignments. The class is divided into groups and the students are asked to perform critical analysis of the scientific papers and present the findings in the class.

  • Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter

This course is run in collaboration with Louisiana Technology University. During the 2024-2025 academic year, the course will be offered online (digitally). The majority of the instruction will take place asynchronously (in Canvas), with periodic 1-hour long synchronous meetings, in Zoom or Teams.

In line with best teaching practices from the field of professional communication, the following teaching methods will be used (listed here in order of priority and frequency of use):

    • Active learning and flipped classroom methods
    • Peer review and peer-learning
    • Short lectures and presentations by instructor(s), followed by discussions and informal assessments

The role of the teacher is to be a facilitator and an expert-coordinator of course work, who guides the students through the content of the course

  • Vurdering og eksamen

    1. Three written assignments, written individually and in teams.
    1. Weekly reading response and peer-review assignments. A minimum of 75% (9 out of 12) out of the reading response and peer-review assignments must be approved.

Detailed description of all assignments will be provided to the students in Canvas.

  • Hjelpemidler ved eksamen

Individual written report of between 1800 and 2200 words.

    The exam can be appealed.

New/postponed exam: In case of failed exam or legal absence, the student may apply for a new or postponed exam. New or postponed exams are offered within a reasonable time span following the regular exam. The student is responsible for applying for a new/postponed exam within the time limits set by OsloMet. The Regulations for new or postponed examinations are available in Regulations relating to studies and examinations at OsloMet.

  • Vurderingsuttrykk

All aids are permitted, provided the rules for plagiarism and source referencing are complied with.
