Introduction
Introduction to Drama and Theatre Communication is a course that prepares you to get started with the Bachelor's programme in Drama and Theatre Communication. The course can also be attended as a part of a years study. In this course, we explore the body and movement in interaction with the theatre mask's form of expression and artistic possibilities.
In addition, the focus is on ensemble work and the central art of collaborating with others, which is a fundamental pillar in the further work with drama and theatre.
The students are challenged to engage in creative processes in interaction with others, to explore the potential of the body, space and mask.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student:
- Has knowledge of communication through mask play and movement
- has knowledge of some basic methods and devices of stage arts
- has knowledge of the importance of cooperation in creative, collective processes
Skills The student:
- can apply the chosen performative expressions
- can apply basic techniques in selected forms of scenic expression
- can apply movement in combination with verbal and non-verbal text
- masters cooperation in creative processes of art and contribute to a good environment for learning
General competence The student:
- is capable of assessing their own and orther's work with respect to both the process and product
- has knowledge of basic principles of what is demanded of cooperation in ensemble work

Teaching and learning methods
Practical exercises will form the basis for work on expression and interaction, either in small groups or classes.
The subject is largely based on learning together with others. This type of learning process requires togetherness and cooperation over time. The students are therefore expected to be present and actively participate in teaching activities and group work. Note that the study is demanding, and that study days are often spent on group work or other study related activities.
In some cases lectures may be given in English
Some teaching may be in English.
Course requirements
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:
- Make a theatremask
- A note on 1500-2000 words, about one's own's work with stage expression
- 80 % mandatory precence in lessons
The student cannot be absent for more than 20 % of teaching and supervision activities. See the teaching plans for more information.
Assessment
The exam in the course is:
1. Practical performance exam - Group The students are given a practical task. The group has one week to prepare a performance. The group can have between 3-6 members. In some cases a student may have to do an individual exam.
The result of the exam cannot be appealed.
Assessment
In some cases, practical/oral group exams can be held as individual exams.
All parts of the exam must be awarded the grade E or better in order for the student to pass the course.

After completion of the course, the student has acquired the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The student
- is familiar with the sound system and intonation of German, the language’s grammatical structure and possesses insight into cultural conventions on the use of the German language
- has knowledge of daily life, traditions, customs, values and cultural expressions in German speaking countries and in Norway (contrastive view on cultural practices across disciplines and situations)
- has knowledge of language learning and acquisition theories and can relate them to children and young adults’ language learning from a multicultural perspective
- has knowledge of the curriculum, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the European Language Portfolio ages 6-12 and 13-18, as well as the European Language Portfolio for language teacher students
Skills
The student
- possesses appropriate oral and written communication skills in German across a variety of topics, situations, and media (including social situations, literature, movies, pop culture)
- is capable of understanding oral and written authentic texts German in different genres and media
- is able to plan and carry out German language lessons, and knows to assess the German language
- is capable of assessing the use of authentic texts and other learning resources in teaching
- is capable of using assessments to guide pupils in their German language skills development
General competence
The candidate
- possesses transcultural awareness and its impact on interaction in the foreign language classroom
- possesses a variety of pedagogical approaches and assessment strategies
- will be able to enhance the pupils’ language proficiency by creating appropriate opportunities to practice the language
