Innledning

Forkunnskapskrav

Ingen ut over opptakskrav.

Læringsutbytte

The students will learn how to use hydraulic models for designing urban storm- and wastewater systems as well as water distribution systems. This will involve introduction to the specifics of urban hydraulics and hydrology, as well as hands-on experience with hydraulic models. The course will cover the following key aspects: Planning, design and implementation of water, wastewater and stormwater systems in cities. Finally, students will develop an appreciation for alternative system elements in design and system optimization.

The students will make use of SWMM, Mike+, Epanet, Scalgo or similar software in this course.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student will have

  • knowledge about the principles for manual design of urban water collection and distribution systems;
  • an overview of the various technologies used to handle urban water and the pros and cons of these technologies;
  • knowledge about the sources for the most important pollutants in urban runoff;
  • advanced knowledge of the principles for model-based dimensioning of urban water collection and distribution systems.

Skills

The student

  • can dimension urban water systems using both hand calculations and advanced hydraulic software;
  • can optimize design and operation of water and sewage systems;
  • can design and optimise pipe systems in connection with other infrastructure above and in the ground;
  • can use system-understanding in the design process;
  • can quantify and assess the material and energy resource efficiency of the systems (transportation of masses, trenches or materials).

General competences

The student will know how to

  • integrate knowledge and to apply this to a range of scenarios, to critically analyse, evaluate, interpret and report on information from a range of sources and to solve complex problems systematically and creatively;
  • effectively communicate on efficiency opportunities to key stakeholders;
  • collect, generate and critically analyse, information that may be uncertain or incomplete and to quantify the effect of this on problem solving, design and decision for water system engineering.

Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter

The teaching will consist of a combination of:

  • Lectures & discussions, guest lectures and real-life problems.
  • Independent studies including video recordings and online exercises.
  • Coursework assignments.
  • Practical use of tools and software.

Vurdering og eksamen

None.

Hjelpemidler ved eksamen

The exam is a Portfolio exam, which consists of the following:

1) One individual simulation exercise to be handed in as a written document of maximum 10 pages including graphics.

2) One individual design and optimisation exercise to be handed in as a written document of maximum 5 pages including graphics.

The exam results can be appealed.

In the event of failed or valid absence of exam, the postponed exam will be given as either an oral or written examination.

Vurderingsuttrykk

All aids are permitted.

Sensorordning

A grade scale with grades from A to E for pass (with A being the highest grade and E being the lowest pass grade) and F for fail is used in connection with the final assessment.

Emneoverlapp

One internal examiner. External examiners are used regularly.
