Schedule
  • Introduction

    In this course, the students will design and produce a specified number of identical product within set limits, relating to for example price, function, finish or the choice of materials. The products will then be sold from their own stands at a market at the university.

  • Required preliminary courses

    Admission to the programme and approved workshop training (coursework requirement in BAPD1020).

  • Learning outcomes

    After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

    Knowledge

    The student is familiar with

    • methods of concept development and innovation
    • basic principles of branding (pricing and calculation)
    • aesthetic tools related to products
    • basic financial mechanisms

    Skills

    The student is capable of

    • processing information and specialist literature in such a way that it elucidates an issue
    • using 2D and 3D media for brainstorming sessions, analysis and product development
    • developing concepts
    • developing different ranges of 3D models
    • making well-founded decisions
    • disseminating subject matter through documentation and presentation of material and form exploration (2D and 3D)
    • explaining the relationship between experimental design methods and product development
    • documenting and presenting development processes

    Competence

    The student is capable of:

    • reflecting on his/her own practice and adjusting it under supervision
    • reflecting on the relationship between theory and practice in relation to products
    • reflecting on how health, security and environment issues contribute to sustainable design practice
  • Content

    After completing the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • has insight into the development of a research project
    • has specialized knowledge of various theories relevant to the field of study and the research project
    • has advanced insight into quantitative and / or qualitative methods and knowledge of what governs method choices

    Skills

    The student

    • can orientate themselves independently and critically within relevant academic literature and find relevant material for a research project
    • can analyze and handle a research material critically and has the ability to think critically and reflect, also methodically, around his/hers own role as a researcher
    • can carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision and in line with current research ethics standards for the protection of sources and source material

    General competence

    The student

    • has developed competence for independent research work
    • has the competence to innovate and to apply their knowledge and skills in new areas
  • Teaching and learning methods

    Lectures, demonstrations, workshops, individual assignments and group work.

  • Course requirements

    The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

    • Reflection notes.
    • Individual market surveys about a chosen product. Comprises market orientation around equivalent products, and broad searches through a field survey. The students will visit at least two different points of sale, and document the price, choice of materials, production methods, functionality, semantics/aesthetics.
  • Assessment

    Individual portfolio assessment subject to the following requirements:

    • Product
    • Product concept
    • Documented work process (2D and 3D material explorations)

    All parts of the portfolio must be passed (grade E or better) in order to pass the exam in the course.

    The exam result can be appealed.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    All.

  • Grading scale

    A grading scale from A-F, where A is the best grade and F is fail.

  • Examiners

    Students must have completed and passed the courses MED4000 Media Development and Media Research, and MED4100 Introduction to Research Method or equivalent method course, before they can take the course MJ4800 Scientific Assistant.
