  • Innledning

    This course presents and discusses the legal framework of the European Union (EU) and of the European Economic Area (EEA). The focus is on the political institutions, the decision-making processes, the sources of law of the European Union and their relation with national law. The aim is to provide knowledge on the EU/EEA dimension, shedding light on Norway's relationship with the European Union.

    Knowledge

    The student will have knowledge of:

    • The development of the EU and the EEA, and their main principles and aims
    • Fundamental topics of EU/EEA law such as sources of law, decision making-processes, political institutions, etc.
    • Topical issues such as the effects of EU law in the national legal systems and Norway's relationship with the European Union

    Skills

    The student will be able to:

    • Understand the scope of the European integration process
    • Illustrate how the decision-making processes within the EU/EEA dimension work
    • Identify and utilize legal sources of EU/EEA law
    • Solve basic issues of EU/EEA law independently
    • Discuss critically the connection between the EU and the Norwegian legal systems

    General competence

    The student will be able to:

    • Reflect and write on topics such as legal sources, political institutions, etc., and on the relationship between national and supranational legal systems
    • Use English legal terminology connected to the topics studied
  • Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

    The course is based on lectures, group work, homework assignments, and literature.

    None.

  • Vurdering og eksamen

    A written digital examination of four hours. The students must write their exam in English.

  • Hjelpemidler ved eksamen

    • Dictionary (English-Norwegian, English-foreign language)
    • Legal documents: TEU, TFEU, the EEA Agreement, directives, regulations, decisions of the Courts, etc.

    Books and slides are not allowed.

  • Vurderingsuttrykk

    A grade scale with five grades from A to E for pass and F for fail is used as the assessment form.

  • Sensorordning

    All the exam papers will be assessed by an internal examiner. A selection of at least 25% of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner. An external examiner will also be used when there is doubt about whether an exam paper should be awarded a pass grade. The grades awarded to exam papers assessed by the external examiner will be used to determine the level of all exam papers.
