Innledning
Emnet omhandler grunnleggende kunnskap som er nødvendig for å lese, forstå og forholde seg kritisk til samfunnsvitenskapelig forskning. Det omfatter basiskunnskaper i vitenskapsteori, kvalitativ og kvantitativ forskningsmetode. Samfunnsvitenskapelig metode er grunnleggende kunnskap som gjør det lettere å lese og forstå forskning og kilder i studiets emner. Emnet gir ferdigheter som er spesielt relevant for arbeidet med bacheloroppgaven.

On successful completion of the course, the PhD candidate has the following learning outcomes defined as knowledge, skills, and general competence:
Knowledge
The PhD candidates have
- thorough knowledge of the links between work and health in Western societies and how they are shaped by social inequalities and institutional contexts.
- knowledge of the diversity of policies and schemes that are implemented to bring disadvantaged groups (back) into the labour market.
- knowledge about prominent research traditions and their theoretical and methodological aspects.
Skills
The PhD candidates have
- the ability to make well informed, critical assessments of different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches to social inequality, health and inclusion in the labour market.
- a scholarly and systematic basis for designing and conducting studies about inequality, health, work/labour market, and how these interrelationships are influenced by welfare state institutions.
General competence
The PhD candidates are capable of
- assessing and identifying new research questions in the field.
- taking part in debates in national and international fora.

Læringsutbytte
Teaching is organised as a combination of lectures, group work and presentations of the participants' own projects. The course is in English.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
Participation is mandatory, and candidates are expected to attend all days of teaching. A minor absence can only be accepted under certain circumstances and upon application. In the event of absences that are not approved, candidates will lose their right to have their essays assessed.

Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter
Studentene skal i løpet av emnet levere en skriftlig besvarelse på fem til syv sider. Besvarelsen leveres i grupper på tre til fire studenter. Det skriftlige arbeidet må være godkjent før man kan gå opp til eksamen. Dersom arbeidskravet ikke er tilfredsstillende, må studentene levere en forbedret besvarelse innen en kort frist. Det stilles krav til kildebruk og korrekt henvisningsteknikk. Det blir gitt bedømmelsen godkjent/ ikke godkjent på arbeidskravet.

All examination support material is allowed as long as source reference and quotation technique requirements are applied.

Grades are awarded on the basis of pass or fail.

The essay will be graded by the course lectures.

Sensorordning
The target group for the course are candidates from the PhD programme in Social Science but it will also be open to PhD students on other programs who wish to study the field in depth.
Internal candidates register the course in their Studentweb and send a summary, maximum one page, of their project to the PhD administration.
External candidates apply through the Søknadsweb. The following documentation must be submitted
- Confirmation on admission to a PhD program
- Summary of your research proposal (approx.one page) and how this PhD course will be relevant for your research project
Maximum number of participants is 15.
The course may be canceled if there are fewer than five qualified applicants.
