Tips for winter activities in Oslo and Lillestrøm

Oslo and Lillestrøm have many opportunities, whether you want to be physically active or relax in front of a fire. Get tips for outdoor winter activities.

Ski slopes

The student association OsloMet IL has created an overview with tips for ski trips in the Oslo area.

Are you a beginner? Then Sognsvann is a good place to start. The subway goes almost all the way to the track.

There are also several ski courses you can sign up for if you want technique tips.

For Kjeller students, the slopes in Rælingen are easiest to get to by public transport. There is a bus from Lillestrøm station to both Fjerdingby and Marikollen, and the bus journey takes approx. 15 minutes. You can also take part of the bus to Hvalstjern and Heia and walk for approx. 10-15 minutes, a little depending on where you are going.

2025 is the year of the outdoors, and the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) organizes several different trips. Find trips that suit you (dnt.no).

Skating rinks

Spikersuppa is located between the Parliament and the National Theatre (oslo.kommune.no). You can use the rink for free and rent skates if you don't have your own.

Frogner Stadion is a large outdoor ice rink right next to Majorstuen. They have skate rentals. The facility is also used for organized sports, so check the overview of audience times (kalender.sportello.no). Look for the times marked "publikumstid" in the timetable.

The Valle Hovin figure skating rink is also a large outdoor ice rink that offers skate hire. The nearest subway stop is Helsfyr. Check the overview of audience times (kalender.sportello.no). Look for the times marked "publikumstid" in the timetable.

Most of the ice rinks in Lillestrøm have natural ice. Check where they are and whether the ice is safe (lillestrom.kommune.no). If the rink is marked with a green arrow, it is safe. If it is marked with a red arrow, it is not safe.

Below Nerdrum station in Lillestrøm you will find Svellet, where the water is shallow and nice for skating when the ice is safe and there is not much snow. To get there, you can take the train to Nerdrum station, cross the train line and walk across the fields down to the water.

Alpine slopes

Tryvann is the largest ski center in the Oslo area (oslo.skimore.no). You get there with the Frognerseteren line and get off at Voksenkollen station. From there, the corresponding bus runs.

Oslo Ski Center is located by Trollvann at Grefsenkollen. You can take a bus there from both Jernbanetorget and Storo. See the opening hours (osloskisenter.com).

Marikollen Ski Center is 4.6 km from Lillestrøm student town. You can get there by bus 350 from Lillestrøm bus terminal. The nearest stop to the hill is Fjerdingby. From there it is 15 minutes to walk to the hill. On Fridays there is a reduced price for lift tickets.

Sledding

Korketrekkeren is Oslo's most popular toboggan run (oslokommune.no). It is 2.7 kilometers long and runs from Frognerseteren to Midtstuen. If you want to sled more times, take the subway from Midtstuen up to Frognerseteren again. Remember to wear a helmet.

Take seating, hot drinks and logs of wood with you, and plan your trip to the municipality's arranged bonfires.

Borrow outdoor equipment

In Oslo, you can borrow equipment from the city's various BUA departments. The website is in Norwegian (bua.no).

At Utstyrssentralen (The Equipment Center) in Lillestrøm you can borrow outdoor equipment for free. You do not have to live in the municipality to borrow equipment. The website is in Norwegian (lillestrom.kommune.no).
