Hiking tips from OsloMet IL

Are you looking for tips on great walking tours in Oslo? Get top recommendations from the student association OsloMet IL.

The student association OsloMet IL has collected some of the nice hiking trips in Oslo They think that a trip should be pleasant and involve snacks, so most of the trips you get tips about here are simple trips that involve a nice view of Oslo and, not least, the opportunity to either buy delicious pastries in a field parlor, or to enjoy the packed lunch with a nice view .

General advice if you find the paths difficult to find; download the UT app for DNT! Here there are descriptions of the routes with markings of the path on the map, and a search function that makes it very easy to find different tours near where you are.

Enjoy your trip!

The coastal path on Bygdøy

Take the bus out to Bygdøy and walk along the coast towards, for example, Paradisbukta or Huk. It is also possible to take the train a couple of minutes from the center out to Skøyen, and go out on Bygdøy from there!

City walk

  • Telthusbakken and the Kuba park
Have you seen the houses on the tent hill? This is perhaps Oslo's coziest street, which is only a short walk from OsloMet. Here you can see old houses in different colours. If you continue to the bottom of the hill, you will find the Kuba park on the other side of the road. In the summer, this is a popular park for picnics, and in Kuba it is also possible to get food. And why not walk down or up along Akerselva on the way home?

  • Blåsen
Within walking distance from OsloMet is also a somewhat unknown viewpoint. You cross through Stensbergparken and follow the footpath upwards past the small serving stall by the fountain, before taking the detour down to the left down towards the road again. Continue forward until you see a path going up the slope on the right. Follow it up – and enjoy the view over many of Oslo's fine and old apartment buildings. This is a perfect place to watch the sunset!

Korsvolltoppen

Korsvolltoppen is located at the Korsvollbråtan bus stop (25 bus). The lookout point has several bonfires and a fantastic view of the city. A comfortable and nice scenic tour with a maximum of a couple of minutes to walk from the bus stop!

Ekeberg and the top of St.hansåsen are also great lookouts!

Vettakollen

If there is not too much snow, this peak is a short-distance Oslo gem. Vettakollen is a classic among the tours in the nearby area, and offers what is perhaps Oslo's finest view. If you want to take the shortest trip, take the subway (Line 1 Frognerseteren) to Vettakollen, and follow the footpath up between the houses until you reach a path. You follow this up (pay close attention to the signs at the few intersections) for about 30 minutes until you reach the top. From here there is a fantastic view over the whole city, with the Oslofjord and all the islands in the distance. A perfect place to bring someone you love, or invite new classmates! If you haven't been there yet, just get there asap.

If you want a slightly longer trip, Sognsvann is also a good starting point. Follow the signs west. Then the trip takes just under an hour. On the way you also pass Båntjern, which is a perfect, small bathing lake in summer.

Grefsenkollen

The view from Grefsenkollen never fails. Fantastic sunset and fantastic pizza if you're hungry. You can get to Grefsenkollen from many roads, but the easiest path is perhaps to start from the Akebakken bus stop in Grefsenkollveien. From there you go up to the left on a winding road, and eventually you will see a barrier and a car park, and to the left you will see a clear path. You follow this path all the way up to Grefsenkollen.

Walk to Rundvann (the Østmark Chapel) from Skullerud (Must be mainly accessible without skis)

Take the subway to Skullerud and go towards Skullerudstua/Plantasjen at Skullerud. Follow the road towards Plantasjen and past a barrier where a road goes up the hill to the Skullerud water treatment plant. From here you go off a path into the forest, follow the signs Rundvann, look carefully for signs as it can sometimes be difficult with many paths on the sides. When you get to Rundvann there are opportunities to take a short break before going back, possibly the Østmarkkapellet is only 100 meters from the water where there are weekly services for those who might be interested in this while you are out on a trip!

Get out challenge

  • Invite a friend along for a walk. Nice short trips are Vettakollen or walking from Jernbanetorget and out towards Salt.
  • Make your next phone call with family/friends while you go for a walk in the local area.
  • Go for a walk early in the day before you start reading
  • Go on a sunrise tour before the study day begins. There is something completely magical about watching the sun rise, and going out the door when it is dark and coming in when it is light.
  • Decide on a day to end your study day by going hunting for the sunset. Viewpoints such as Korsvolltoppen, Ekeberg, St.hanshaugen, Grefsenkollen, Vettakollen and Blåsen are examples of nice places you can go. Or take the trip down to the water, for example at the opera or out to Bygdøy.
  • The best shilling bun can be found at the market stalls in Oslomarka. And they are extra good when enjoyed in nature.
  • Take a break from reading for a couple of hours and go into a country house to eat a freshly baked shilling bun in nature. Ullevålseter, Skjennungstua, Tryvannstua, Kikut and many, many more have fantastic buns.
