After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence: 

Knowledge 

The student can

  • discuss theory and results from up-to-date research relating to the topic of the bachelor's thesis
  • update his/her dental technology knowledge and action competence in accordance with evidence-based practice

Skills 

The student can 

  • write a project description that specifies the topic, relevant research question and schedule for the completion of the bachelor's degree project
  • describe and explain the choice of professional topic, research question and research design based on philosophy of science and methodology literature
  • carry out systematic literature searches and use relevant professional research and subject matter in a way that meets the general academic guidelines
  • carry out the project in accordance with scientific criteria and guidelines for research ethics and data protection
  • answer the research question in a clear conclusion based on the presentation of empirical material, and make active use of empirical data and theory when discussing the research issue/questions
  • present the project in writing and orally using precise academic terminology and reliability

General competence

The student can 

  • criticise the self-chosen research design related to the in-depth topic of the bachelor thesis
  • demonstrate a professional attitude to research and development work
  • present important subject matter and exchange points of view and experience with others in the field of odontology and in this way contribute to developing good practice and innovative thinking
  • discuss general professional principles and challenges based on critical assessment of sources
  • assess relevant academic and professional ethics issues

Læringsutbytte

The work and teaching methods include seminars, self-study and team-based learning in groups related to the systematic problem-solving process and project cooperation. During the course, the students will receive up to five hours of supervision per project assignment. The project supervision is given in connection with the development of an exam outline and the selection of a topic, research question and research design, and in relation to methodology, data processing and overall thesis structure.

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence: 

Knowledge 

The student 

  • can, based on knowledge about the oral cavity, material science and evidence-based practice, choose suitable materials, production methods/technology and design for relevant work assignments in the chosen specialisation, removable prosthetics (B)
  • can explain relevant design and laboratory technology adaptations to achieve good function and acceptable aesthetics in a given case
  • can describe the different roles and responsibilities of the dental healthcare professions and the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in the best interest of the patient in line with relevant legislation and professional ethical guidelines
  • is familiar with supervision and professional healthcare communication and can describe the principles for active listening and the importance of congruity in verbal communication
  • is familiar with how variations in health competence can affect different patient groups’ ability to perform oral self-care

Skills 

The student can

  • use specialist terminology in communication, verbally, in writing and digitally when choosing solutions and construction design
  • document and critically analyse their own experiences and challenges related to structural design and handling of materials in clinical cases
  • make study models, individual impression spoons and bite plates that have good functionality and a presentable appearance
  • make complete dentures for one or both jaws with normal bite and crossbite with good articulation fit and aesthetic results
  • produce a hard orthodontic bite splint (Michigan splint) using conventional and digital techniques with acceptable functional and aesthetic results
  • construct simple wire clamps for partial prostheses with optimal retention and aesthetics
  • design and produce functional partial Cobalt-Chrome skeletons with optimal compressive stress under supervision

General competence 

The student can

  • plan their own workday with a suitable division of work processes in a production context
  • identify the professional field and respect professional points of view and norms relating to good practice, applicable legislation and professional ethics issues
  • make use of supervision and constructive feedback, and show a willingness and ability to participate in goal-oriented cooperation and professional communication with dental health personnel in a professional context
  • communicate with patients in connection with prosthetic treatments

Vurdering og eksamen

Part 1) Each exam is assessed by one internal and one external examiner.

Part 2) The oral exam is assessed by one internal and one external examiner

Vurderingsuttrykk

Assessment of practical training: The assessment is based on the learning outcomes for the course and the continuous assessment that students are subject to throughout the practical training period. Students can only be assessed if they meet the minimum attendance requirement of 80 % for the practical training.

Resit assessment: If the student fails the external practical training in an enterprise and/or the clinical observational practice, the student must retake the entire practical training period.
