Course history

Introduction

The course forms a broad theoretical and practical basis in anatomy, pathology, terminology and methods used in dissection of selected surgical specimens in a pathology department.;There is also a focus on issues related to fixation time and significance for later analyses of removed tissue as well as procedures regarding biobanking of material.

Recommended preliminary courses

The student should have at least one year of experience from a pathology laboratory.;The student should also have access to perform dissection in a pathology department.

Required preliminary courses

Individual written exam, 3 hours

The exam result can be appealed.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:;

Knowledge;

The student;

  • can discuss laws and regulations concerning the handling, documentation and archiving of human sample material
  • can assess the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of normal tissue as well as common pathological changes in the relevant tissues and organs
  • can describe anatomy, pathology and terminology for selected surgical specimens

Skills;

The student;

  • can apply current safety regulations and satisfy hygiene requirements when working with equipment, chemicals and biological test material
  • can independently identify macroscopic changes in the relevant sample material
  • can in a structured manner perform dissection of pathological changes in tissues in a quality-assured manner

General competence;;

The student;

  • can work knowledge-based with dissection in their own department
  • can critically evaluate dissection procedures and contribute to the creation of new procedures
  • can critically evaluate the processing of human material for special analyses, biobanking and research

Teaching and learning methods

Grade scale A-F.

Course requirements

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:;

  • a minimum attendance of 80 % at digital scheduled teaching
  • a minimum attendance of 80 % at teaching session at OsloMet
  • individual presentation of report from independently performed dissection, time frame 15-20 minutes

Assessment

Students are required to have good programming skills, for example by having completed the course Programming.
