Innledning
The goal of the course is to give students real-life problems and research advancements in the topic, and a more comprehensive understanding of what the design of complex structures involves. Through seminars with contribution from invited researchers and experts from the consulting industry, students will be presented a wide range of topical issues relating to the:
- analysis and design of buildings and large structures such as bridges, offshore installations and high-rise buildings,
- building physics,
- new building materials,
- transport infrastructure,
- geotechnical engineering,
- smart water process and infrastructure engineering etc.
A project assignment is also included to give the students both theoretical knowledge and experience of applying this knowledge to real-world complex issues. The assignment shall be based on a real building and construction project or be part of a more extensive research and development project, and the project report shall take a scholarly, reflective approach to the problem at hand and include a discussion of alternative solutions.

Læringsutbytte
Structures are often subjected to dynamic loads during their lifetime. This course aims to equip students with knowledge in structural dynamics, with particular emphasis on the building and bridge structures. The course is intended to provide necessary knowledge to determine the structural response to dynamic loads. Topics include single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, response to harmonic loading, response to impulsive transient loading, numerical integration, element stiffness, mass and damping matrices, multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems, damping, and eigenvalue problems. Theoretical knowledge on structural dynamics will be supplemented by its application on different structural engineering problems such as vibration control, system identification, earthquake response.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
The teaching will consist of seminars with invited lecturers, discussions and presentations. The students will be given individual assignments relating to the topics of the seminars (reflection notes) and a bigger project assignment.
-
Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter
The students must have attended at least 80% of the seminars and have individual reflection notes approved (approx. 4-5 pages per note) linked to the seminars they have attended. Students who fail to meet the coursework requirements can be given up to one opportunity to resubmit reflection notes before the exam.
-
Vurdering og eksamen
The teaching will consist of lectures and voluntary exercises.
-
Hjelpemidler ved eksamen
None

Vurderingsuttrykk
Portfolio assessment subject to the following requirements:
- Project report prepared in groups of 2-3 students. Approximately 40-50 pages
- Four individual assignments
Each student’s work will be assessed together as portfolio with one individual grade at the end of the semester, but both parts that make up the portfolio must be assessed as "pass" in order for the student to pass the course. The overall assessment can be appealed.
