Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most impactful technologies in the 21st Century. From video-games to self-driving cars to automation of administrative processes, artificial intelligence is becoming an evermore present in our modern society. The growing applications of AI has transformed the industry, how we work and how we live.

As any technology, AI has potentials, limitations and challenges to overcome in order to be useful. To do so, society must become aware of its true AI’s true potential - what it can do and what it cannot do - and learn how this technology works. The OsloMet Artificial Intelligence Programme: Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning aims to provide a sound understanding of AI technologies: its history, functionality, capabilities, as well as its limitations and challenges.

To critically appraise AI technologies, the student will get in contact with diverse perspectives on the ethical, legal and social considerations around AI. Without any coding, students will be introduced to the mechanics and processes involved in building a working AI system. Finally, the students will assess all the perspectives surrounding AI and then be encouraged to express their own critical judgement about the potentials of the technologies in their own professional context.

Content

Knowledge

On successful completion of this course the student has knowledge of:

  • The history of AI, its current trends and breakthroughs as well as its current challenges.
  • The main areas and methods of AI including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and deep learning.
  • The theoretical and practical aspects involved in designing and employing AI technologies.
  • The multiple use-cases for AI in different professional sectors. Its value propositions and their business models.
  • The issues that AI brings to ethics, economy and work-labor market.

Skills

  • On successful completion of this course the student has the ability to:
  • Identify and discriminate the problems may be better solved with AI technologies from those that are not.
  • Which AI methodology is most suitable to solve a problem
  • Understand how their professional lives may be affected (improved or threatened) by AI technologies

General competences

On successful completion of this course the student can apply:

  • The theory underlying AI and its history to better understand news and its consequences, as well as become better at identifying fake-news on AI.
  • Concepts in AI methodologies to critically assess potentials and risks of using AI technologies on a given problem
  • Use-case examples to identify business and professional opportunities, as well as identify actionable steps to cease them.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, group discussions, and demonstrations using pre-developed AI models in Python using Jupyter Notebooks.

Two examiners will be used. External examiner is used regularly.
