After completing the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has

• knowledge of the use of management control systems in organisations
• an overview of different management control systems
• insight into the process of designing new control systems and changing old control systems to face different challenges of organisations
• knowledge of the unintended consequences of management control systems and how to handle these
• insight into ethical issues of design and use of control systems

Skills

The student know how to

• use critical thinking, discussion and collaboration when working with design and use of management control systems in organisations
• design appropriate management control systems in smaller organisations

General knowledge

The student know how to

• develop and work with cases

The following coursework requirements must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:

• Coursework 1: There is one course assignment in groups of 2-3 students.

The coursework must be completed and approved by the given deadline in order for the student to take the exam. If the coursework requirement has not been approved, the student will be given the opportunity to submit an improved version one time by a given deadline.

The exam in the course is a written supervised exam of 4 hours.

The following aids are permitted:

• All handwritten and printed materials
• Calculator (see regulations for the use of calculators in the programme description)

The exam papers are assessed by one internal and one external examiner.

At least 25% of the exam papers will be assessed by two examiners. The grades awarded for the papers assessed by two examiners form the basis for determining the level for all the exam papers.

The students should have basic knowledge of strategy, finance, financial accounting, management accounting and organisations.
