Introduction
Work and teaching methods used in the course are lectures, self-study, supervised written assignments and practical exercises. On the basis of the information given, the students will individually prepare a design proposing different types of goals. The students will present these to the class. Students will also develop a research question for a scientific study, plan and conduct the study and write a method and result section.
Required preliminary courses
- Participation in group work (80%)
- Presentation of the design for an experimental study to the group
The required coursework must be approved before the students can take the unsupervised written exam (home exam).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student is familiar with:
- Analyses, design, construction, operation and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure
- Trench infrastructure
- Master planning
- Waterworks hydrology, water chemistry and the quality of various sources of drinking water and water quality terminology
- Relevant process engineering in water, wastewater and sludge treatment
- The impact of pollution on different recipients
- Basic knowledge on microbiology associated with hygienic barriers and biological water treatment processes
- Regulations and standards for the establishment, operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants
- Concepts, metrics, methods and interpretation of water quality data measured in drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and recipients in relation to official regulations
Skills
The student:
- is capable of basic planning and design of distribution networks, stormwater solutions and mechanical treatment facilities for water, wastewater and stormwater
- masters important terminology in the field
General competence
The student is capable of:
- reflecting on the choice of solutions for water, sewage, surface water and waste management in relation to safety and the surroundings
- disseminating measurement data and their consequences
