Course history

Introduction

The work and teaching methods on the programme comprise lectures, seminars, group work in student groups of five to eight students, observational practice and simulation and skills training.

The students will take part in a two to three-day long observational practice in the ambulance service. The students also carry out simulation and skills training in lifesaving first aid.

Required preliminary courses

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:

  • Minimum attendance of 90% in observational practice placement
  • Minimum attendance of 90% in simulation and skills training
  • Minimum attendance of 80% at seminars and study groups
  • One individual written reflection note from observational practice placement, 1000 words.
  • Individual practical test in lifesaving first aid

Learning outcomes

Oral exam in groups of 4-6 students.

The exam consists of a presentation (approx. 20-30 min.) and subsequent examination (approx. 10-20 min.) The students will be assigned a topic for their presentation one week before the exam. The exam group is normally given the same assessment (pass/fail). In special cases, individual assessment may be given.

All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

  • The paediatric nurse’s function and responsibility for caring for acutely and/or critically ill children.
    • The students prepare their own research questions.
    • Carried out in groups of 3-5 students.
    • Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20 %).
    • The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
    • The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
    • The students receive written feedback from the lecturer.

  • The paediatric nurse’s function and responsibility for meeting the fundamental needs of premature children.
    • The students prepare their own research questions based on a patient situation with a child who has a gestational age of < 28 weeks.
    • Individual assignment.
    • Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20 %).
    • The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
    • The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
    • The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
    • The students receive written feedback from fellow students and oral feedback from the lecturer.

  • Attendance in compulsory activities

Assessment

All answers are assessed by two examiners. An external examiner is used regularly, at a minimum of every third completion of the course. If selecting answers for external evaluation, the external examiner’s assessment of the selected answers shall benefit all students.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

5 credits overlap with the course PMED1000 Introduction to Paramedicine

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

For group exams, all the students in the group are awarded the same grade. Students who are awarded a fail grade (F) are given one opportunity to submit a reworked version of the assignment.

Examiners

All answer papers are assessed by two examiners, one of whom must be external.
