Innledning

The aim of the course is to provide the students both with the theoretical basis of cross-cultural communication and to develop their practical skills in dealing with cross-cultural encounters in the global workplace.

Anbefalte forkunnskaper

It is an advantage, but not obligatory, that the students have taken a course in Professional English at Oslo Business School.

The course in Cross-Cultural Communication deals with some issues that are relevant for the course in Negotiations.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

The pedagogical approach includes:

  • Lectures, group work, discussions, case work
  • Student presentations
  • Independent study

Regular attendance and active participation in classroom activities are expected.

Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter

There are two obligatory assignments that must be approved by the instructor before the student is eligible to take the final exam:

  • An oral presentation on an assigned topic, 2 or 3 students together (10-15 minutes per group)
  • A written assignment: application of theory to a specific case (2-3 pages)

Vurdering og eksamen

An individual 4-hour written exam will be held at the end of the spring semester.

Hjelpemidler ved eksamen

The course SYKK/SYKPPRA20 and SYKK/SYKPPRA30 complement each other. In this course, the students will practice independence in planning, carrying out and assessing nursing in acute and chronically ill patients. The prevention of complications and early detection of deterioration in the patients’ condition are key elements. Quality development, patient safety and ethics and health gudiance are also part of the course.

  • SYKK/SYKP1400 Diseases and Health Deficits, 10 credits
  • SYKK/SYKP1300 Pharmacology and Administration of Medicine, 5 credits
  • Part 1 of SYKK/SYKPPRA20 Nursing Patients with Acute, Critical and Chronic Diseases 1

or equivalent.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of

  • explaining care pathways an in acute, critical and chronic diseases and treatments
  • under supervision, contributing to equal nursing services independent of patients’ gender, ethnicity, religion and view of life, functional impairment, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and age
  • explaining the significance of nutrition in the event of disease and challenges linked to obesity, malnutrition and disease-related undernourishment
  • assessing factors related to an increased risk of patient injuries or unwanted incidents and contributing to work processes to promote quality improvement and patient safety
  • explaining the significance of next-of-kin for the patients’ health and quality of life both when it comes to majority and minority cultures
  • explaining key concepts in the nurse’s pedagogical responsibilities: guidance, counselling, health guidance and shared decision-making
  • explaining information security in nursing
  • explaining package progress in the health service

Skills

The student is capable of

  • carrying out and explaining nursing to patients with the most common symptoms, signs of change/deterioration at an early stage, and implementing necessary measures
  • implementing national knowledge-based professional procedures and national guidelines
  • applying different approaches and methods in health guidance adapted to the individual's needs
  • applying educational principles when imparting information, teaching and counselling patients and next-of-kin and communicating across language barriers with the help of a professional interpreter

Competence

The student

  • can show responsibility, commitment, independence and follow professional ethical guidelines in meetings with patients, next-of-kin and colleagues
  • can reflect on his/her own professional practice and progression
  • can reflect on how unwanted incidents can occur and discussing this in relation to professional responsibility in the practice of nursing
  • can safeguard the patient’s dignity and integrity and promoting the patient and next-of-kin’s right of co-determination and autonomy
