Individual adaptation of studies

Individual adaptation of studies

If you have a disability, chronic illness or other special needs, you can apply for individual adaptation.
  • Who is eligible to apply?

If you have a disability, chronic illness or other special needs, you can apply for individual adaptation. Reasons for applying may for instance be vision or hearing impairment, mobility impairment, psychological challenges, dyslexia, cognitive difficulties or chronic illnesses and injuries. You can also apply if you have needs other than the ones mentioned here. Please do not hesitate to contact the Special Needs Services at OsloMet if you have any questions.

As an international exchange student, you must bring your own personal aids or apply for support to your home institution. Please contact your home institution for more information.

From the spring 2023, Erasmus+ students with permanent disabilities or chronic disease can receive an additional grant. If you also have special needs on exchange, you can apply to your home institution for reimbursement of costs related to this through the Erasmus+ programme. Please contact you home institution for more information.

If you are an international master’s degree student who has come to Norway to take a master's degrees and go back home or to other countries, you will have to bring your own personal aids. If you are an international master’s degree student with permanent residency in Norway, you might be eligible for support from The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (nav.no).

  • What can I apply for?

You can apply for specific adaptation measures that do not reduce the academic requirements in the education you are taking. Individual adaptation can also involve relatively simple measures that are agreed directly with your faculty, lecturers, student advisors or other involved parties. The adaptation must be due to disability or illness.

You may also apply for measures that can compensate for your disability other than the ones mentioned here.

Examples of measures that you do not have to reply for:

    • Adaptation regarding access to buildings that are not universally designed.
    • Your faculty can review procedures for evacuation in the event of fire/fire drills.
    • You can ask to see presentations before teaching starts.
    • You may request a postponement for a specific piece of coursework.
    • Free from compulsory teaching and examinations due to religious holidays .

These measures are implemented in close connection with the lecturer responsible for the course in question.

Example of measures you will have to apply for:

    Limited absence from compulsory teaching

If you require short-term medical treatment due to injury or an accident, you may apply for exemption from some of the compulsory teaching. The absence must be compensated for by other types of measures that are agreed on with the lecturer.

    Special examination arrangements

You can apply for special examination arrangements or an alternative form of examination. Please apply as early as possible.

  • How do I apply?

  • Sign language interpreter or personal assistant?

If you have a disability that involves you bringing a sign language interpreter, personal assistant or you are using a wheelchair, you should notify the Special Needs Services at OsloMet before starting your studies. OsloMet will then be prepared to receive you in the best possible way. Your faculty can facilitate the use of guide dogs and collaboration with sign language interpreters.
