Course history

Introduction

In this course, the students shall gain an overview of how operating systems work and learn to understand the principles on which they are based. In particular, they shall gain insight into the structure of operating systems through scripting, focusing mostly on Linux.

Recommended preliminary courses

None.

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of:

  • explaining the basic principles of how an operating system organises all resource use and makes the use of computers simpler and more efficient for ordinary users and applications
  • identifying the most important operating systems and explaining the differences between them
  • explaining the components of a computer and how the operating system controls it
  • explaining multitasking, CPU scheduling, processes, threads and synchronisation
  • explaining how the operating system organises the use of cache and internal memory
  • explaining hard drives and file systems
  • analysing and explaining concrete sequences of events for running software on and using an operating system
  • explaining virtualisation technologies

Skills

The student is capable of:

  • communicating with and controlling the operating system from the command line in Linux and Windows
  • creating new users and groups, defining rights for files and folders in Linux and Windows
  • using pipes and redirection to put together simple commands to solve complex tasks in Linux and Windows
  • solving concrete tasks relating to operating system with the help of scripting for Linux and Windows
  • using scripting language for file processing, arrays and hash, and for regular expressions

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • exchanging and discussing issues relating to operating systems
  • giving recommendations on the use and procurement of operating systems
  • quickly becoming familiar with new technology relating to operating systems
  • considering and recommending which scripting or programming language is best suited to solve a concrete technical problem
  • helping ordinary users to solve tasks relating to operating systems

Teaching and learning methods

The course forms a broad theoretical and practical basis in anatomy, pathology, terminology and methods used in dissection of selected surgical specimens in a pathology department.;There is also a focus on issues related to fixation time and significance for later analyses of removed tissue as well as procedures regarding biobanking of material.

Course requirements

The student must have been admitted to the study programme.;The course is also offered as an individual course.

Assessment

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:;

Knowledge;

The student;

  • can discuss laws and regulations concerning the handling, documentation and archiving of human sample material
  • can assess the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of normal tissue as well as common pathological changes in the relevant tissues and organs
  • can describe anatomy, pathology and terminology for selected surgical specimens

Skills;

The student;

  • can apply current safety regulations and satisfy hygiene requirements when working with equipment, chemicals and biological test material
  • can independently identify macroscopic changes in the relevant sample material
  • can in a structured manner perform dissection of pathological changes in tissues in a quality-assured manner

General competence;;

The student;

  • can work knowledge-based with dissection in their own department
  • can critically evaluate dissection procedures and contribute to the creation of new procedures
  • can critically evaluate the processing of human material for special analyses, biobanking and research

Permitted exam materials and equipment

The course is mainly web-based and includes digital lectures, digital group assignments and self-study.;The self-study includes some self-training in dissection.;In addition, there will be a mandatory teaching session at OsloMet with a duration of approx.;3 days which includes demonstration of dissection in a pathology department.;The group assignments include oral presentations where students receive feedback from fellow students and the subject teacher on their work.

Grading scale

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:;

  • a minimum attendance of 80 % at digital scheduled teaching
  • a minimum attendance of 80 % at teaching session at OsloMet
  • individual presentation of report from independently performed dissection, time frame 15-20 minutes

Examiners

Individual oral exam, up to 30 min.
