Course history
  • Introduction

In this course, the students are expected to acquire in-depth knowledge of how organs and organ systems function in relation to each other and how pathophysiological processes and medical conditions start and develop. This knowledge forms a necessary basis for the students' ability to observe, assess and identify symptoms in relevant patient groups.

Knowledge about the effects and side effects of drugs and an understanding of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles will help to enable students to administer advanced pharmacological treatments in a professionally sound manner.

Students need knowledge about advanced medical treatment of failure of vital functions in connection with medical and surgical conditions in order to be able to take part in, perform and monitor advanced medical treatment and prevent complications from occurring during treatment.

The immune system of acutely and/or critically ill patients is weakened, leaving them particularly susceptible to nosocomial infections. To be able to care for acutely and/or critically ill patients, the students must acquire in-depth knowledge of the life of microorganisms, their virulence and how infection is transferred, as well as infection prevention work.

  • Required preliminary courses

    Admission to the programme.

  • Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge and skills:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • has in-depth knowledge of how organs and organ systems function and how pathophysiological processes and medical conditions start, develop and are observed and treated
    • has in-depth knowledge of the life of microorganisms, their virulence and how infection is transferred, as well as infection prevention work in connection with acute and critical illness
    • has in-depth knowledge of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles
    • has in-depth knowledge of the effects and side effects of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of acutely and critically ill patients
    • has in-depth knowledge of the laws and regulations that regulate the use of medical equipment so that they can use such equipment in a safe and satisfactory manner and prevent patient injury

    Skills

    The student

    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories on pathophysiological processes and medical conditions
  • Content

    Not relevant.

  • Teaching and learning methods

    Lectures and self-study.

  • Course requirements

The students will undergo supervised practical training. The course is organised such that the students primarily focus on anaesthesia for patients in ASA categories 1 and 2, but with increasing focus on patients in ASA categories 3 and 4. The student is expected to show progress, take responsibility and, to an increasing extent, make independent assessments in nurse anaesthesia.

  • Assessment

Students must have passed ANESTPRA10 Clinical Studies in Nurse Anaesthesia, Level 1 in order to start this course.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • has in-depth knowledge of how the most common anaesthesia methods and drugs function and are used
    • has in-depth knowledge of the most common complications in connection with acute and/or critical illness, advanced medical treatment and anaesthesia
    • has in-depth knowledge of special circumstances relating to different surgical procedures that have a bearing on the choice and application of different anaesthesia forms, techniques and drugs
    • has in-depth knowledge of maintaining and restoring vital functions in situations where they are threatened
    • has knowledge of the effects of different treatment and examination methods on the nurse anaesthetist's working environment

    Skills

    The student

    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories and methods in nurse anaesthesia
    • is capable of working on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the functions and responsibilities of a nurse anaesthetist:
      • is capable, with some assistance, of working in an independent and responsible manner when administering general anaesthesia to otherwise able-bodied patients (ASA 1 and 2) in accordance with applicable guidelines
      • is capable of independently administering and evaluating prescribed anaesthetics and other relevant drugs
      • is capable of independently administering and evaluating the most commonly used pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain relief methods
      • is capable of independently monitoring patients under regional anaesthesia and deep sedation
      • is capable of using the anaesthetic machine and advanced medical equipment commonly used in treatment in a conscious and sound manner
      • is capable of independently identifying acute and problematic situations
      • is capable of ensuring continuity in patient treatment through written and oral documentation

    Competence

    The student

    • is capable, with some supervision, of analysing ethical issues based on relevant discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge
    • is capable of participating actively in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on patient treatment in accordance with his/her own competence and applicable ethical principles and healthcare legislation
    • is capable of contributing to new ideas and innovation processes in nurse anaesthesia
  • Grading scale

    Simulation and supervised practical training.

  • Examiners

The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

    • The student's specification of learning outcomes for the course
    • Attendance in compulsory activities
      • Simulation
  • Course contact person

The assessment is based on the learning outcomes for the course, the student's specification of the learning outcomes and the formative assessment made of the student during the practical training period.

An attendance requirement applies to practical training. In order to pass a practical training course, the student must have attended at least 90% of the planned activities in each course. Students must make up for absence exceeding 10% by agreement with the lecturer and the practical training establishment. If a student's absence exceeds 20%, he/she will fail the course. Students who fail a period of practical training must retake the whole training period.

  • Overlapping courses

    Pass-Fail.
