Introduction
The course is based on lectures, self-study and study groups/group work. Presentations and discussions will be based on experience from practice-based research and action research in the workplace and organisations, as well as experience from social work and child welfare services.
Required preliminary courses
The project assignment deals with complex engineering issues within the field of structural engineering and building technology. The special topics of the assignment are customised in accordance with the focus research area (PhD subject area) of the PhD students. The selected project gives the students experience in applying the theoretical knowledge, scientific methods and suitable simulation, analysis and design tools for solving complex engineering problems.
The course will be offered once a year, provided 3 or more students sign up for the course. If less than 3 students sign up for a course, the course will be cancelled for that year.
Learning outcomes
Seminars, project assignment (scholarly work), scientific report and oral presentation.
Content
Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering science or related fields.
Teaching and learning methods
Module 1 will take the form of lectures. Module 2 will take the form of lab and homework assignments. Module 3 will take the form of seminars. In module 3, the student will present a case to the other students. We will also invite guest lecturers from research groups that focuses on machine learning and network science to introduce the students to potential tools and analysis methods.
Practical training
The students will participate in lab experiments to explore how once can measure various aspects of internet's robustness and performance. The students will write a summary of one of the tools that were introduced in the lab and discuss its benefits and limitations.
Course requirements
The essay will be graded by the course lectures.
Assessment
Pass or fail.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
Through focused seminars, in cooperation with the master's degree in structural engineering and building technology at OsloMet, a wide range of typical complex engineering issues related to analysis and design of buildings and structures are presented. Furthermore, the students are expected to present their research ideas and the results of the project at a seminar.
As example, the course can include the following specific topics:
- Design and durability of concrete, timber and steel structures.
- Rehabilitation of buildings and structures.
- Degradation of building materials. Compatibility of new materials in historic structures.
- Heat, Air and Moisture (HAM) transport through building envelopes.
- Building Physics and Climate Adaptation.
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for simulating the interaction between exterior climatic conditions, e.g. wind, and buildings/structures.
- Bioclimatic architecture, Passive building design and Building Energy Simulation (BES)
- Innovative building materials and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
Grading scale
Basic background in computer science and networking.
Examiners
The course describes the important enabling technologies of cloud computing, explores state- of-the art platforms and existing services, and examines the challenges and opportunities of adopting cloud computing. Moreover, the course investigates how to protect the critical data increasingly being stored in the cloud. The students learn how to build a security strategy that keeps data safe and mitigates risk.
Course contact person
The presentation will be assessed by the course leader, whereas the tool summary document will be assessed by the course leader together with an additional examiner. External examiner is used periodically.
