Course history

Introduction

Required preliminary courses

Alle eksamener i 1. og 2. studieår må være bestått.;

Learning outcomes

This course, together with Mathematics 1000, will give the students an understanding of mathematical concepts, problems and solution methods with the focus on application. Students will practise using mathematical software in the work on the course, which will enable them to carry out calculations in a work situation.

Content

A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator's internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.

Collection of formulas: Haugan, J. (2016). Formler og tabeller. NKI Forlaget (with own notes in the collection of formulas).

One a4 paper with handwritten notes.

Teaching and learning methods

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Course requirements

Ingen arbeidskrav/obligatorisk aktivitet.

Assessment

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge The student is capable of:

  • using linear algebra to determine eigenvalues and solving systems of differential equations
  • explaining the concept of convergence and methods of determining convergence
  • explaining power series representation of functions and convergence using Taylor polynomials
  • discussing functions of multiple variables and applying partial derivatives to different problems

Skills The student is capable of:

  • calculating eigenvectors and diagonalising matrices
  • applying diagonalisation of matrices to solve systems of differential equations
  • determining convergence of series, among other things by using the ratio test, and differentiation and integration of power series parts
  • finding Maclaurin series and convergent polynomials of known functions and using Taylor polynomials to find approximate values for integrals and limiting values
  • describing and discussing functions of multiple variables using, among other things, level curves and partial derivatives
  • interpreting the gradient and the directional derivative geometrically and using linear approximation and the total differential for functions in multiple variables to calculate measurement errors and uncertainty
  • determining and classifying critical points in functions of two variables
  • applying mathematical tools to matrices, series and functions of two variables

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • identifying the connection between mathematics and his/her own field of engineering
  • translating a practical problem from his/her own field into mathematical form, so that it can be solved analytically or numerically
  • using mathematical methods and tools of relevance to his/her field

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Joint lectures and exercise sessions. In the exercise sessions, the students work on assignments, both individually and in groups, under the supervision of a lecturer.

Grading scale

None.

Examiners
