Course history

Introduction

The module consists of a six-week period of supervised practical training in an prosthetic and orthotic company. The focus of the module is lower limb and spinal orthoses, which often involves treating people with neurological disorders or injuries to the lower limbs and/or back. Good communication and cooperation with the user and interdisciplinary team are key to achieving good treatment results.

  • Profession, psychology, interaction and communication (1 credits)

Required preliminary courses

The student must have passed the second year of the programme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has

  • knowledge of organisational and structural factors with a bearing on professional practice at the practical training enterprise
  • knowledge of important topics, theories, issues, processes, tools and methods used in treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation of relevance to lower limb and spinal orthoses

Skills

The student is capable of

  • using, giving grounds for, carrying out and reflecting on clinical processes with an emphasis on lower limb and spinal orthoses
  • providing guidance on how to use orthoses
  • analysing and reflecting on ICF and outcome measures and using the results in a treatment context
  • assessing whether there is a need to refer clients to partners
  • communicating and discussing professional opinions with users, next-of-kin and partners
  • discussing and reflecting on the treatment of children in need of orthoses
  • performing quality control of orthopaedic appliances
  • exploring professional issues in a systematic and reflected manner in his/her clinical practice

General competence

The student is capable of

  • practising in accordance with applicable legislation, framework conditions and professional ethical guidelines
  • demonstrating and reflecting on professionalism in all tasks at the practical training enterprise
  • acting with empathy, respect and equality to promote autonomy and co-determination
  • independently keeping records and relevant documents used in the practical training enterprise
  • handling ethical dilemmas and practising in accordance with professional ethical guidelines
  • contributing to work in and coordination of interprofessional teams
  • reflecting on his/her own development, the user perspective and the perspectives of other healthcare professionals
  • identify his/her own knowledge needs, demonstrate insight in relation to his/her own learning needs and obtaining new knowledge and skills

Teaching and learning methods

A six-week period og supervised practical training in an prosthetic and orthotic company.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before a final assessment can be made of the student-s practical training period:

  • minimum attendance of 90 % during the period of practical training
  • weekly reflection notes to be submitted to the programme

Examiners

The midway and final assessments are made by the practical training supervisor and the contact lecturer at OsloMet. The final decision on whether the course is approved or not is made by the university.
