Course history

Introduction

Den offentlige samtalen er et kretsløp der en rekke forskjellige massemedier og formidlingsformer inngår: nyhetsmedier, sosiale medier, bøker, tidsskrifter, forskning, utredning og formidling, for å nevne noe. Emnet Sakprosa innføring, som er obligatorisk for studenter som tar studieretning Sakprosa, men også åpent for andre masterstudenter på Master i medieutvikling (samt masterstudenter fra andre relevante fag), tar særlig for seg sentrale sider ved saklitteraturfeltet i Norge, og setter det også inn i en bredere internasjonal sammenheng. Emnet fokuserer særlig på det vi kaller litterær sakprosa (som f.eks. reportasjelitteratur, debattbøker, essayistikk, biografi/ andre historiske arbeider, anmelderi, store undersøkende prosjekter, lærebøker, og forskning som har en bredere allmennhet som målgruppe), men også andre former for sakprosa - f. eks. spesialisert forskning, rapporter og utredninger og deres plass og virkning i offentligheten. Vi diskuterer også grenseoppgangen mellom skjønnlitteratur og sakprosa - er den opplagt, eller finnes det spennende gråsoner? Emnet tar for også for seg fagforfatterrollen, litteratursosiologiske perspektiver, og teoretiske, metodiske og etiske problemstillinger på sakprosafeltet. I tillegg er eget skrivearbeid under veiledning en viktig komponent.

Emnet åpner for produksjon av ulike typer litterær sakprosa samt formidling av mer spesialiserte sakprosaformer som f. eks. forskning,  samt at studentene kan velge å lage forskningsoppgaver om sakprosa.

Emnet består av forelesninger, seminarer, pensumstudier, eget skrivearbeid og veiledning.

Course requirements

The student should have the following learning outcomes upon successful completion of the course:

Knowledge

The student

  • has acquired thorough knowledge on the variety of theories on globalization and conflict
  • has reached a deeper knowledge of the challenges for journalistic safety and issues of impunity
  • has acquired solid historic and actual knowledge of journalistic performances in war and conflicts

Skills

The student

  • can use appropriate theories and methods in journalism and media studies to analyze issues of media globalization and conflict coverage
  • can analyze media texts in order to reveal approaches to diversified societies and differing cultures, for example ethnocentrism and multiculturalism, and to be more aware of different alternative journalistic approaches to diversity and globalization
  • can analyze mechanisms which promote peaceful or violent solutions to conflicts, including journalistic performance in wars and conflicts, and improve professional competence concerning the safety of those who produce journalism accordingly
  • has developed his/her skills in alternative reporting based on for example the principles of peace journalism

General competence

The student

  • is able to analyze professional and occupational issues as well as questions in research ethics in the field of journalism, diversity and globalization
  • is well qualified to present academic as well as journalistic material and is able to give and receive constructive criticism and response
  • has acquired a deeper understanding of the role of media and journalism in a globalized and diversified late modern society

Assessment

The course includes lectures, discussions, multimedia conferences and group work. The course will be organized as two seminar weeks, with the following topics:

  • General theories on globalization - and the media
  • War, peace and human rights
  • Safety for journalists covering conflicts

Permitted exam materials and equipment

The Master`s Project in Product Design is a comprehensive and independent theoretical and practical in-depth piece of work. The students should develope and demonstrate insight within relevant research, theories, methods and practice found relevant within the chosen project theme, research question and frames of the study.

The students work in the master´s project is expected to reflect;the ability to implement a chosen specialization as an additional approach or focus.; ;

Grading scale

Completion of all courses from the first three semesters of the master's programme.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:;

The student;

  • has in-depth knowledge;of the chosen research area with a clear reference to the field of design
  • manages using relevant scientific theory and design methodology
  • has advanced knowledge to answer research questions using relevant research methods, literature, theory and practice

Skills;

The student;

  • can facilitate and lead activities in a design process
  • can independently plan and carry out a comprehensive independent research project in terms of a master's project
  • can collect, analyze and critically evaluate relevant sources of information
  • is capable to justify and reflect on decisions made during the master's project adequately and competently;
  • is capable to demonstrate well-argued and documented findings and results through text, visualizations and products
  • can argue and explain their academic positions within the chosen field of study

The student;

  • can contribute to new thinking and development of new design knowledge and practice
  • is capable to relate their design process to professional research ethics and sustainable value creation;
  • is capable to critically reflect upon their process and role in relation to achievement
  • is capable to collaborate and involve resource persons in their research

Admission requirements

Individual portfolio examination,;followed by an oral examination.;The master's project;portfolio;consists;of:;

  • a;written;and visual assignment. (The projects should consist of a written and visual assignment (between 80-120 pages). Material which needs to appear physical (models, maps, posters etc.) could be submitted as part of the master`s project)
  • design;process;documentation;
  • a;product (physical-, digital- or system-oriented)
  • finished material for a presentation of the master thesis in a public common context

The examination result at the portfolio examination can be appealed.;

Course contact person

The most important teaching and learning methods for this course are individual work, and individual and group tutoring.;Students are encouraged to form colloquia groups and establish collaborations with external resource persons and communities. There will be arranged workshops and/or seminars.

If two or more students wish to work together on the portfolio degree project, a written application must be;submitted  to;the Department of Product Design in connection with the project description 3rd semester.;
