Introduction
Language of instruction: Norwegian
The purpose of this course is to enable students to actively contribute to promoting safe and high quality health and care services. By health and care services is meant both public and approved private services, as well as health promoting work in the public and private sectors. The course introduces students to the organisation and management of health and care services, and prepares for interprofessional collaboration in quality improvement work. Through the course, the students will learn about different quality improvement models and the interaction between user knowledge, experience-based knowledge and research-based knowledge in clinical decision-making processes.

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the examination:
- A peer assessment in groups of up to four students, subject to given criteria
- Prepare and implement a teaching plan for fellow students, subject to given criteria

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge The student
- can describe the health and care services’ management, organisation and framework conditions
- can explain what characterises a high-quality service
- can discuss prioritisation criteria and ethics in the health and care services
- can explain management strategies in innovation and implementation of evidence-based practice
- has insight into the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being, and an understanding of the connection between health and sustainable social development
Skills The student
- can apply models for quality improvement (preparation, planning, execution, evaluation and implementation)
- can apply different quality indicators to analyse quality improvement projects
- can contribute to quality improvement on the basis of relevant knowledge, research and user participation
- can provide structured feedback and assessments to fellow students on quality improvement work in progress

The student
- can apply knowledge and skills in managing and executing quality-related work, including implementing evidence-based practice

Teaching and learning methods
The course will use varied, student-active work methods. The teaching will mainly be digital, in addition to seminars on campus during the course.
The work and teaching methods include lectures organised as blended learning, group assignments digitally and at seminars, and self-study. The students will be divided into groups. Each group will choose a delimited quality improvement project that they will improve. During the course, the students will perform a peer assessment where students provide feedback.
The course will be taught in English and all pertaining learning material will also be in English. The students can choose whether they wish to write their examinations in a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) or in English, regardless of whether there are exchange students in the examination group.

- An oral presentation of a delimited quality improvement project in groups of up to six students
- A peer assessment in groups of up to six students

Assessment

Health communication comprises all communication on and related to health. Communication competence is crucial in all types of interpersonal relationships. Health related problems occur, are experienced and appear through communication. The student will learn to apply theories and tools to develop health communication competence, that is the competence to reflect on, observe and communicate about communication, while also understanding communication as a skill. The student will learn to apply quality criteria to different situations varying regarding function, purpose and target group of the communication. The course also consists of basic topics that will build foundations, insight and understanding within health communication The course is appropriate for everyone who works with people.

The student must have been admitted to the Master’s Programme in Health Sciences, Pharmacy or Health and Technology.

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- can describe the term health in the light of a communication theoretic perspective
- can explain how health competence, and socioeconomic, psychological and biological factors affect individuals’ communication
- can describe how communication can affect the body, life experience, embodiment, and coping
- can describe effective health communication with selected target groups
- can describe how communication processes can be evaluated
Skills
The student
- can appraise and apply relevant theories related to health communication at the individual, group and societal level
- can apply relevant knowledge about the relationship between psyche and soma in order to promote appropriate behaviour
- can reflect on and critically analyse one’s own role and responsibility regarding interaction with the user/patient and family
- can reflect on ethical challenges that can arise in communication with the recipient/user
- can apply and adapt methods of evaluation of communication
General competence
The student
- can use communication as central tool of a health care provider
- can practice adapted health communication
- can contribute with innovation to knowledge on communication and working with relations

Examiners
The course will use varied, student-active work methods and consists of several learning modules, which include lectures, observation practice, case-based groupwork, flipped classroom and discussions based on the written syllabus. The teaching is session-based on campus, with two sessions over 1 week each, with an interval of some weeks. The students will solve different assignments using various submission formats and peer assessment.

Overlapping courses
Individual home examination in the form of a written report. Scope: 2300 words (+/- 10%).
Students can also choose to write/conduct the examination in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
