BLH2200 Society, Religion, Life-stance and Ethics Course description

A practical course in analyzing text and talk.

This is a practical course where the students will be offered analytical tools to carry out analyses of documents, observations and/or interviews on the topics of their own research, in comparison with leading discourses as well as research knowledge and other contextual aspects. The course will also focus on strategies for discussing explanations and implications of findings. The content of the course is based on a combination of insights to discourses and power from social sciences and humanities.

On completion of the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student

• has in-depth knowledge about analyzing text and talk and their main research traditions.
• has in-depth knowledge of theories and conceptualisations about the relationship between discourses and power.

Skills

The student

• has gained methodological competence to skillfully outline a discourse analysis based on own empirical material, as a core content of a paper aimed at publication in a research journal.

General competence

The student

• can identify and establish constructive connections between theories, empirical data, and methods based on developed methodological competence.

Det legges opp til varierte undervisnings- og arbeidsformer, som for eksempel individuelt arbeid, gruppearbeid, klasseundervisning, seminarer, ekskursjoner, storforelesninger og veiledning.

Til emnet ligger også temadagen Refleksjon, profesjon, praksis (RPP2) som bygger på temadag i kunnskapsområdet Språk, tekst og matematikk (RPP1), og undervisning i temaet Barn i vanskelige livssituasjoner (BIV1) som videreføres i LSU (BIV2).

Veiledet praksisstudier

Praksisstudiet i andre studieår er veiledet og består av 35 praksisdager. Fem av disse dagene har fokus på overgangen fra barnehage til skole.

Fravær fra praksisstudiet i emnet må være tatt igjen innen utgangen av vårsemesteret. Praksislærer vurderer praksisstudiet til bestått eller ikke bestått.

Følgende arbeidskrav må være godkjent før avsluttende eksamen kan avlegges:

• Prosjekt i grupper som dokumenteres ved et refleksjonsnotat (om lag 1500 ord) og muntlig presentasjon i gruppe for klassen (om lag 20 minutter). I særskilte tilfeller kan det avtales med faglærer at arbeidskravet kan gjennomføres individuelt.
• Individuell samtale med en faglærer på om lag 20 minutter med utgangspunkt i hovedtemaer fra pensum.

Faglig aktivitet med krav om deltakelse

• Temadagen Refleksjon, profesjon, praksis 2 (RPP2).
• Temadager og undervisningsøkter om Barn i vanskelige livssituasjoner 1 (BIV1).
• Deltakelse på praksisforberedelse
• Deltakelse på praksisoppsummering

Avsluttende vurdering er en individuell skriftlig hjemmeeksamen over syv dager med utgangspunkt i oppgitte temaer. Oppgaven har et omfang på 3500 ord +/- ti prosent.

Ny/utsatt eksamen

Ny og utsatt eksamen gjennomføres på samme måte som ved ordinær eksamen. Det gis ny oppgavetekst ved ny og utsatt eksamen.

Studentens rettigheter og plikter ved ny/utsatt eksamen framgår av forskrift om studier og eksamen ved OsloMet. Studenter er selv ansvarlige for å melde seg opp.

The paper will be assessed by the course coordinator and a member of the academic staff involved in the PhD program.

Gradert skala A-F

Target group

The target group is PhD students and academic staff who want to carry out a critical analysis of own data material. The course is relevant for PhD students and researchers who conduct research on almost any issue, including questions related to the welfare state, environmental issues, migration, extremism and radicalization, and any topics that are taught at school and are discussed in classrooms.

Admission requirements

The requirements for admission include completing a five-year master's program (integrated or consisting of a three-year bachelor's program and a two-year master's program, in total 300 ECTS) in the fields of teacher education, other pedagogical disciplines, educational science, development studies, social sciences, or other relevant areas related to the Ph.D. program. The master's degree should include a substantial independent project equivalent to a master's thesis (minimum 30 ECTS). An internationally completed master's degree that corresponds to at least four years in the Norwegian education system may also be considered for admission (please check the grounds for enrollment on the website of the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills). https://hkdir.no/en/foreign-education/lists-and-databases/higher-education-entrancequalification-gsu

In case of a large number of applicants, PhD-students enrolled in the PhD programme in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education will be prioritized, then students in other PhD-programmes, then academic employees at the Faculty of Teacher Education and International Studies.

Applicants that are not enrolled on the PhD-programme at the Faculty of Education and International Studies at OsloMet must send a summary in English of maximum one A4 sheet with relevant information about their own project / area of interest, containing topic, methodology, theoretical approach, and why this course might be relevant for their project.
