Course history

Introduction

The Design Office project involves all three years on the bachelor’s programme, and this course is the part that concerns management. The students will be presented with assignments from external parties. They will establish a management team of 2–4 students. Their main task is to plan and carry out an external assignment. They will be given 6–10 students from the first and second years as collaborators. The management team is responsible for ensuring that the design office works optimally and that the assignment is carried out and presented according to the agreed premises laid out by the clients.

Required preliminary courses

Knowledge equivalent to having passed the first, second and third semesters, or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student masters dynamic project management, including

  • project planning

  • budget control

  • working in a project team

  • client control

  • being familiar with solutions to creative blocks

Skills

The student is capable of

  • coordinating his/her own project

  • managing and assessing the project’s finances

  • dealing with management aspects of the project, including division of tasks and competence requirements

  • dealing with conflict situations in projects

  • dealing with clients

Competence

The student is capable of:

  • managing a project

  • understanding strengths and weaknesses of the project

  • reflecting on his/her own development in the learning process and adjusting it under supervision

Content

Students will be taught methodology for project work. They will learn about the different phases and challenges associated with project work. The work will result in a project report describing the different phases and challenges associated with a project. The third-year students will be project managers in the groups.

Teaching and learning methods

Group work, workshop coordinated with the first and second-year students taking the courses BAPD1000 and BAPD2000.

Course requirements

The following coursework is carried out by the group, is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • One assignment relating to the customer report that the design office develops together, and that the third-year students are responsible for carrying out.

  • A written reflection note on project implementation that is handed in before the oral exam.

Assessment

Oral presentation in groups where all group members contribute.

The presentation should demonstrate that the students are familiar with project organisation and what challenges may arise in projects.

The result of the exam cannot be appealed.

All.

Grading scale

A grading scale from A-F where A is the best grade and F is fail.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
