Introduction
The course takes an in-depth look at Norwegian and international design history from around 1850 until the present day. Theoretical perspectives on design and theory of science are also key areas of the course. The students will also receive practical teaching in the writing process, academic writing and documentation.
Required preliminary courses
The course deals with how we understand other cultural groups and how it creates the basis for and influences the design process and the result. Furthermore, the course focuses on the complexity of communication and the communication’s importance for the process, product and dissemination.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge
The student
- is aware of the role and importance of design in social development as well as to individuals, and how they have varied historically and in the present age. This also relates to future opportunities for the role and importance of design in society and to individuals.
- is aware of his/her own professional role and understands it in relation to both a contemporary and a historical social context
Skills
The student
- is capable of developing new perspectives and using analysis and critical reflection on the basis of his/her own understanding of the importance and role of design to social development and individuals
- is capable of critically reflecting on future opportunities for the role and importance of design in society and to individuals
- is capable of putting his/her own professional role in perspective and of using analysis in projects to identify opportunities and limitations to his/her own professional role
- masters written and oral discussion and argumentation on the basis of his/her own understanding of the importance and role of design to social development and individuals
Competence
The student is capable of
- seeing him/herself and his/her own work in a human and global context
- exchanging points of view and experience with others with backgrounds in the field and in this way contribute to developing good practice
- reflecting on his/her own development in the learning process and adjusting it under supervision
Teaching and learning methods
Course requirements
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:
Active participation in groups of 5–7 students to prepare two 10-minute oral presentations for the class.
Assessment
Ferdigheter
Studenten
Generell kompetanse
Studenten
- kan vise forståelse for generell kjemi som basis for farmasifagene
Permitted exam materials and equipment
Portfolio assessment, individual or in groups of up to three people, subject to the following portfolio requirements in the project report:
- Scope of the portfolio - one student max 35 pages, group of two students max 40 pages, group of three students max 45 pages. Appendices come in addition.
- Process documentation in the form of pictures, graphics, text and other media, with argumentation for the development and choices made.
- Result from the designer project.
- Grounds for choices and giving an oral presentation (carried out as a coursework requirement).
- Discussion and analysis of how/what the product the student has designed communicates, and in what way and to whom.
All parts of the portfolio must be passed (grade E or better) in order to pass the exam in the course.
The exam result can be appealed.
Grading scale
All.
