Required preliminary courses
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:
- 6 compulsory exercises must be approved. These can be solved individually or in groups, but all exercises must be submitted in individual Canvas folders within specified deadlines. The scope of work is about 2 hours of self-employment per exercise assignment.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge
The student is familiar with:
- different types of materials and their qualities through practical material processing
- methods and procedures for sound HSE practice in material processing
- wood, metal, ceramics, glass, textiles and polymers and pertaining support materials
Skills
The student is capable of:
- using machinery and materials in the practice workshops in accordance with the department’s HSE regulations and instructions from supervisors
- using basic design terminology in written and oral communication
Competence
The student is capable of:
- discussing ideas for design solutions by communicating them through physical models and material samples
- practising responsible HSE conduct and good workshop culture in cooperation with fellow students and supervisors
- actively using professional supervision and discussion as learning and development tools

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, method demonstrations and individual supervised exercises. Work individually or in groups of approx. 15 students.

Course requirements
All printed and written aids, and a handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.
