Guidelines for Master’s Theses at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design

If you are submitting a master's thesis at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, you can find information on this page.

Approved by the Education Comittee at TKD 20.03.2024.

For programs where there is a conflict between the National Curriculum Regulations and these guidelines, the National Curriculum Regulations takes precedence.

  • Supervision

    1. All master’s students are assigned one main supervisor and may have one or more co-supervisors.

    2. The main supervisor must be employed by OsloMet and hold a master’s degree or a higher academic degree in a relevant field.

    3. An agreement is established between each individual master's student and OsloMet. The agreement should specify, among other things, the number of hours of supervision the student is entitled to.

    4. Co-supervisors do not need to be employed by OsloMet. The co-supervisors are expected to be professionals in the relevant field, but do not need to hold a particular academic degree.

    5. For internal supervisors, the number of hours for supervision is determined in the work plan. This includes time spent on supervision with the student and other work necessary for guidance, such as preparation for supervision and administration. The number of hours is determined at the department or program level.

    6. The co-supervisor can be paid by OsloMet, but it is not mandatory.

    7. The ethical guidelines for supervision at OsloMet apply to both supervisors and students.

    8. Supervisors cannot serve as examiners for students under their own supervision.

  • Prerequisite

To be eligible to write a master's thesis, all courses from the first year of the program must be successfully completed.

For long theses (60 ECTS) that are divided into several courses, the prerequisite applies to the concluding course.

  • Extension

In case a student experiences delays while writing their thesis, the student might be eligible for an extension. There are three alternative new submission deadlines:

    • 48 hours after the original submission date/time
    • First half of the following semester
    • End of the following semester (only available for theses with 60 ECTS)

The submission deadlines are fixed, and precise dates are determined by the departments study administration. Granted requests for extended deadlines do not automatically entail the right to increased supervision for completing the thesis. Any extensions beyond the maximum length specified above would necessitate initiating a new project. Leave of absence and temporary suspension are not equivalent to extensions and may result in alternative or postponed submission deadlines compared to those initially specified.

Documented illness, unforeseen academic obstacles related to the project (such as data access issues, technical challenges with equipment, delayed deliveries from third parties), engagement in student politics, or other compelling reasons may warrant an extension.

Students seeking an extension must contact the administrative adviser for their master’s program in writing no later than two weeks before the original submission deadline. A 48-hour extension may be granted even within the last two weeks before the submission deadline.
