How to apply for leave of absence

How to apply for leave of absence

You may apply for leave of absence in certain cases.

In what cases may leave of absence be granted?

Leave of absence is defined as time-limited absence in relation to a student’s progress of study. You will normally be granted leave of absence due to the following reasons:

  • Pregnancy or child care
  • Compulsory military service
  • Illness

To be granted a leave of absence for other reasons, you should have completed at least one semester of your study programme. Normally, leave of absence may be granted for up to one year.

How to apply for leave of absence

Send the application, including documentation (medical certificate, letter summoning you to compulsory military service etc.) to your faculty.

Section for Academic Affairs at your faculty will process the application.

If you have any question, please contact the Information Centre at your faculty. The application will be processed as soon as possible. However, in certain periods there may be a longer processing time. In such cases you will receive a provisional reply within one month after the application date.

What are my options if the application is not granted?

  • You may appeal the rejection.
  • The appeal must be sent to your faculty and your application will be given a new assessment.
  • If you have new information that are of importance to your appeal, you may enclose supplementary information.

If the appeal is not taken into account, it will be processed by the Appeals Committee at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University, see Act Relating to Universities and University Colleges § 5-1 subsection 1. The Appeals Committee’s decision is final and may not be appealed.

Please note the following:

  • Be aware that changes in programme- and course descriptions may be adopted during your absence, e.g. changes in the syllabus, coursework requirements and form of examination.
  • When you are on leave, you are responsible for keeping yourself updated on any changes related to deadlines and rules in connection with programme- and course descriptions. This also applies to selecting courses, if applicable for your study programme.
  • You are also responsible for notifying the faculty of when you are expected back from the leave of absence within the specified deadlines applicable to your faculty. If you do not notify your faculty, you may have your admission to study revoked.
  • If you do not wish to continue your education when the leave of absence has expired, you must send a written notice of withdrawal to Section for Academic Affairs at your faculty.
  • In certain cases, you may take an examination during the leave of absence. You must apply to be granted this option. If the application is granted you are responsible for registering yourself for the examination within the appointed deadlines.
