Exams as a private candidate or admission to individual courses – what’s the difference?

Exam as a private candidate

Taking an exam as a private candidate requires a fee and gives you limited access to teaching and other resources. You will have access to the learning platform Canvas, which instructors use to post notes and other information from lectures.

To take an exam as a private candidate, you must meet the admission requirements for the study program the exam belongs to, as well as any prerequisite requirements for the specific course. Admission requirements are described on the study program's website.

Some exams cannot be taken as a private candidate because they require mandatory attendance in teaching or practical training.

You can find OsloMet's guidelines for private candidate fees here (in Norwegian).

Admission to individual courses

As a course student, you will have the same rights as any other student. You will get an access card, access to teaching activities and to Canvas, and you can receive feedback from the subject teacher on any work you submit during the course. You pay the ordinary semester fee.

In order to apply for individual courses, you have to meet the programme’s general admission requirements and any addition requirements that apply to the course in question. Admission requirements and application deadlines can be found on the study web pages of the individual courses.
