These are the winners of the Master's Thesis Prize 2023

This year, OsloMet awarded the Master's Thesis Prize for the first time. The winners come from three different master's programs: Child Welfare, Primary School Teacher Education for grades 1-7, and Civil Engineering.

The award ceremony took place during the Research and Innovation Day at OsloMet on Thursday, November 23rd.

The winners were rewarded with a diploma and a cash prize of NOK 15,000 for each individual winner and NOK 10,000 for each of the students who won the group project.

OsloMet's Education Committee was the jury, and they received nominations from supervisors and examiners.

The jury says this about the winners:

Ingvild Olimb, Master`s degree in Child Welfare

Master`s thesis title: Talking to Children Exposed to Violence and Abuse. A Study on Training Conversation Skills in Revealing Conversations Using an Interactive Digital Training Program.

"This thesis shows a completely new and innovative way of training communication skills, using a research-based training program that combines artificial intelligence with knowledge from psychology and pedagogy.

The thesis demonstrates the importance of individual feedback and the importance of practicing over time when training to talk to children about difficult topics.

The work will be useful for all professions that work with children who have experienced neglect and abuse."

Isabella Vold Ludviksen, Master`s degree in Primary School Teacher Education for grades 1-7

Master`s thesis title: Once Upon a Time there was a Fairy Tale: A Playful and Learning-based Board Game.

"This is one of the first Master's theses in primary school teacher education to be carried out as entrepreneurial development work. The thesis can therefore be groundbreaking in terms of what this format can involve.

The candidate has developed a game for use in teaching that is useful in school, easy to use, and with an academic grounding that teachers can rely on.

The thesis provides good examples of how play, in the form of games, and subjects can mutually strengthen each other.

The project builds bridges across fields such as pedagogy, game theory, and Norwegian, making it a valuable and relevant contribution to the field."

Anette Nyland and Jennifer L. Wivast, Master`s degree in Civil Engineering

Master`s thesis title: Sustainable Ultra-High Performance Concrete: Investigation of Binder and Fiber Alternatives

"Norway has many bridges constructed in the 1950s and 1960s that now require maintenance. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an important material for rehabilitating and strengthening these aging bridges, but it is not environmentally friendly.

The thesis explores sustainable alternatives in ultra-high performance concrete. The Master's thesis presents various mixture compositions for UHPC that significantly reduce the use of cement while maintaining or even improving the material's performance.

The work has the potential to contribute to significant changes in professional practice, particularly in the rehabilitation of older bridges in Norway."

The Master`s Thesis is not available for reading because articles will be made based on the results.
