MOK2300 Information, Communication and Social Media Emneplan

The topic is compulsory in the 4th semester of the Bachelor Programme, and is one of the courses exchange students may choose. Tuition is in English.

The course provides an introduction to the theories of information and communication used in the public and private sectors.

Knowledge

The student

• knows about different theories and concepts used in analyzing mediated information and communication.
• knows about how matters of media-related legislation, especially in Norway, are associated with  information, communication and social media 
• knows about principles and strategies for information storage, retrieval and use

• can analyze and reflect critically and ethically on the roles and responsibilities of information and communication professionals
• can develop, implement and manage successful social media strategies for public and private enterprises
• can apply insights from research and development to practical and theoretical use

• can communicate and present in public in oral and written form the main theories of mediated information and communication
• is updated on new trends and innovation in the fields of information, communication and social media

The course lasts one semester, and consists mainly of lectures, group work, excursions, and self-tuition of syllabus. The group work is linked with themes from lectures and syllabus. 

As coursework requirements, three short individual papers are completed during the semester, each approximately 500-750 words (2-3 pages). All three papers must be written in English. These are submitted in Canvas within a settled deadline. One of the papers must also be presented orally in English as a short address (approximately 5-10 minutes) to participants, supported by use of audiovisual equipment (PowerPoint, web pages, film / video) and selected social media.

The coursework requirements are approved by the course leader. Students failing to deliver on time or get pass will have 1 opportunity to submit again for consideration during the semester. 

All coursework requirements and the topic of the term paper must be approved before the student may sit for the exam.

Individual, written term assignment: During the semester, every student must complete an individual term assignment of about 3,500-4,000 words (10-12 pages). The assignment must be written in English.

Students who have failed to pass the ordinary examination and students with legitimate absence are entitled to one new examination during the semester.

All utilitites allowed as long as rules for source reference are followed.

Graded according to scale A-F.

The term assignments are assessed by an internal and an external examiner. An extract of at least 25% of the answers is assessed by two examiners. The results of this extract form the basis for setting the level of the rest of the exams.
