  • Innledning

    This course addresses issues related to transport infrastructure maintenance. Currently, we are witnessing not only the rapid development of transportation systems but also a significant increase in the amount of diagnostic data requiring reliable analysis. The traditional approach based on reactive and preventive maintenance is no longer sufficient, as demonstrated by the numerous construction disasters occurring immediately after periodic inspections. To mitigate losses, it is necessary to predict potential critical events that could result in the suspension of entire infrastructure systems, which is particularly important in the case of transportation. The course provides knowledge of traditional and modern diagnostic technologies (including simulation techniques), measurement data analysis using new digital tools, common and unusual infrastructure damage and its prediction, as well as threats related to data transmission and the use of machine learning-based tools. It also teaches a practical approach to planning and organizing infrastructure diagnostic tests.

    Knowledge

    The candidate should have knowledge of:

    • Methods of diagnostics in transport infrastructure
    • Methods of preventive maintenance
    • Potential profits and practice in predictive maintenance

    Skills

    The candidate is able to:

    • Describe and analyze differences in various maintenance scenarios
    • Describe standard techniques used in preventive and predictive maintenance
    • Describe and analyze the transition from classical approaches to maintenance to modern digital techniques necessary for predictive maintenance
    • Plan diagnostic activities in relation to real situations and expected outcomes

    Competencies

    The candidate can:

    • Show and explain the potential of digitized models and dynamic diagnostics in transport infrastructure
    • Prove the need for prediction in terms of safety and security
    • Work within a team to develop and define a team project along with clarification of its objectives and scope
    • Present results in a professional environment.

    Lectures, readings, discussions, conversations, movies, excursions, project-based learning.

  • Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter

    The following coursework requirements must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:

    • The project title
    • A group (of up to 3 students) or individual presentation (20min/group) to discuss the project ideas to be implemented as part of the final project.

    The project title and presentation should be submitted and presented by the given deadlines, shared on canvas, and approved by the course responsible in order for the student to take the exam. If one or more coursework requirements have not been approved, the student will be given the opportunity to submit an improved version once by the given deadline.

  • Vurdering og eksamen

    The assessment consists of three parts:

    1. Written report, approx. 6000 words excluding appendix; weighted 40%.
    2. Oral presentation of the report, approx. 15 minutes; weighted 20%.
    3. Oral exam, approx. 15 minutes; weighted 40%.

    All assessment parts can be done individually or in groups with a maximum of 3 students. In case of preparing assessment 1) and 2) in groups, students can choose to have assessment 3) individually.

    In group work, the students' different contributions must be reflected in the submitted work. Normally, all members of the group receive the same grade, but in exceptional cases, individual grades may be assigned within groups after further assessment. In such cases, all students in the relevant group will be informed that grades will be given individually before the grades are published.

    All assessment parts must be awarded a pass grade (E or better) in order to pass the course.

    Assessment part 1) can be appealed, parts 2) and 3) cannot be appealed.
