Activism and Academic Rebellion

In this seminar we discuss the relation between activism, research and teaching.

Date/Time

Location

OsloMet, Pilestredet 32, rom N040.013

What does activism look like within academia? What are the potentials, challenges and pitfalls of promoting activist practices through research and teaching? Is activism simply a way to label our academic work “useful” or can it inform radical imaginaries of change and what is possible?

Aina Landsverk Hagen (AFI) og Marianne Millstein (NIBR) will present their special issue 'Becoming Rebels: From Everyday Acts of Protest to Radical Imaginaries and Societal Change' (Journal of Extreme Anthropology, 2024), suggesting an analytic framework for analysing activism in everyday spaces and asking what it takes to become (more) rebellious in our academic work. They are joined by Camilla Eeg-Tverbakk and Cecilie Sachs Olsen who will present their Erasmus+ project 'ACT UP! Active Citizenship through Theatre for Urban Politics' which develops new educational methods for engaging students in activist practices in response to the climate crisis.

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on how activism is defined, perceived, practiced, and considered (un)welcome in a university context. The panel will be chaired by Marikken Wullf-Wathne.

This an open seminar, so please do invite other colleagues and friends that might be interested.

Hope to see you there!
