Visa rules when going on exchange to the UK

If you are going on exchange to the UK, you may have to apply for a visa. Below you will find information applicable for you.

Whether you must apply for a visa, depends on how long you are going to stay in the UK and what you are planning to do there.

This information applies to students with a Norwegian passport. If you are a student with a passport from another country than Norway, you must check what is applicable for you (gov.uk).

  • Are you going to study for less than 6 months?

    If you are going to study in the UK for less than 6 months, you do not have to apply for a visa. However, you still need to have a valid passport for the whole period and include some documentation showing what you are going to do in the UK and that you have enough money to make it while you are there.   • Are you going to study for more than 6 months?

    On the website you will also find information about the documentation you must enclose with the application and the terms that apply for residency and financing etc. You must pay a fee of £348 for the visa application and an additional £470 for mandatory health fees. 

  • Are you going on a practical training placement?

    Apply for a Temporary Worker – Government Authorized Exchange Visa (gov.uk)

    On the website you will also find information about the documentation you must enclose with the application and the terms that apply for residency and financing etc. Norwegian citizens will have to pay a fee of £55 for their visa application and an additional £470 for mandatory health fees.
