Guidelines for using artificial intelligence (AI) in student assignments
-
As a student at OsloMet, you have free access to the AI services Microsoft Copilot and SIKT KI. These tools give you the benefits of GPT technology and artificial intelligence, while ensuring your privacy and data security.
AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and similar can be useful in assignments and exams. It is important that you understand what is allowed and what is considered cheating.
Can I use AI tools during exams?
Yes, you may use AI tools if the exam allows "all aids". AI is considered an aid. If there are restrictions on the use of aids, this must be clearly stated in the course description or exam instructions.
What counts as an AI tool?
AI tools include language models (such as ChatGPT and SIKT), image analysis tools, and tools for analysing large datasets.
What happens if I use AI when it’s not allowed?
That is considered cheating. This also applies if you use AI-generated text, images or code without disclosing it.
Do I need to state that I used AI in my assignment?
Yes. You must explain how you used AI, for what purpose, and which tool you used. In some cases, you should also include the questions (prompts) you asked the AI tool.
Should AI tools be listed in the reference list?
No. AI is not considered a standard source, as the generated text is unique and cannot be retrieved by others. Therefore, it should not be cited in the usual way.
How do I mark AI-generated content in my assignment?
You can use quotation marks, italics, indentation, and footnotes to indicate that the content was generated by AI. The most important thing is that it is clearly visible to the reader and examiner.
Approved Guidelines
The guidelines were adopted on 25 June 2025 by the Pro-Rector for Education in consultation with the Pro-Rector for Research and Development, following discussions in the Education Committee and the Research and Development Committee. The original text follows below.
AI tools such as Sikt AI-chat (ChatGPT), Copilot and similar applications are considered regular study aids. By AI tools, we mean various types of artificial intelligence, from large language models to AI tools for image analysis or analysis of large datasets.
You can use AI tools when an exam or assignment permits "all aids". Always check the course plan or exam instructions. If AI tools are not permitted, this will be specifically stated there.
It is considered academic misconduct if you use AI when it is not allowed. If you copy text, images, code or other content generated by AI directly into your assignment without making the reader or examiner aware of this, it is the same as presenting others' work as your own. This is considered academic misconduct.
Because AI does not function like a regular source, you should not include the use of AI in your reference list or mark it in the text in the same way as other sources. When you cite sources, others should be able to find the same information. This is not possible with AI, since the tool creates new and unique text each time you ask.
The best approach is to explain how and why you have used AI. State which tool you used, for example "Sikt AI-chat", and preferably also what you asked about. If you copy text, images or other material directly from the AI tool, you must mark it clearly with quotation marks, italics or indentation, and add a footnote explaining where the text comes from.
