Course history

Introduction

The course aims to equip participants with the foundational knowledge of Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategies for the Wind Farms (WFs). We will explore the fundamentals of commonly used maintenance strategies such as reactive, preventive, condition-based, and predictive. Special focus will be given to using SCADA and condition monitoring data to frame maintenance plans. The course will also discuss the concept of opportunistic maintenance, especially in offshore settings, including the management of vessels and cranes essential for accessing and servicing WFs. By the end of this course, participants will be well-prepared to design effective maintenance strategies aligning with ISO55001 standards that optimize the operation of WFs and reduce overall costs.

Recommended preliminary courses

None

Learning outcomes

Students who complete the course are expected to have the following learning outcomes, defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge:

  • Understand the different types of maintenance strategies (reactive, preventive, condition-based, and predictive) and their applications in wind farm management.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and logistics involved in opportunistic maintenance for offshore wind farms, with a focus on the coordination of vessels and cranes.
  • Learn about the complexities and logistics of opportunistic maintenance in offshore wind farms, including the management of vessels and cranes.
  • Comprehend how to use ISO55001 standards and its significance in framing effective maintenance strategies for wind farm operations.

Skills:

  • Analyze and interpret data from SCADA and condition monitoring systems to make informed decisions about wind turbine maintenance.
  • Develop comprehensive maintenance plans that incorporate reactive, preventive, condition-based, and predictive approaches.
  • Employ critical thinking to manage resources, including vessels and cranes, to efficiently address maintenance needs, especially in offshore settings.

Competence:

  • Design and implement effective O&M strategies that optimize the performance and lifespan of WFs while reducing operational costs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess risks and make strategic decisions in maintenance management to prevent downtime and extend the operational efficiency of WFs

Teaching and learning methods

  • Classroom and online lectures.
  • Invited lectures by experts from industry.

The course will be conducted in a hybrid format at OsloMet, allowing students outside of Oslo to participate remotely. It is scheduled to run for three weeks, with lectures held on two days each week. Each lecture day will consist of a four- 45 minute sessions. This adds up to approximately 36 hours of lectures in total.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • 1 group project report of 900 to 1500 words (written in groups of two)

Assessment

An individual project report of approximately 700 - 1000 words, excluding appendices

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted, provided the rules for plagiarism and source referencing are complied with.

Grading scale

Pass or fail
