Course history

Introduction

The course covers important theoretical approaches in the subjects pedagogy and psychology.

The course will also give the students an introduction to behaviour analysis and concepts used to carry out functional analyses.

Recommended preliminary courses

Passed VERN1310/VERND1310 before starting the course is recommended.

Learning outcomes

After completing the topics behaviour analysis (1) and psychology and pedagogy (2), the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of how behaviour is influenced by conditions in a person's surroundings (1)
  • is capable of explaining important schools of thought in psychology and pedagogy (2)

Skills

The student is capable of

  • defining and providing examples of the following basic concepts in behaviour analysis: behaviour and surroundings, positive reinforcement, intermittent reinforcement, discriminative control, conditioned reinforcers and chains, negative reinforcement, punishment respondent behaviour and emotions, motivating operations, model learning and rule-governed behaviour (1)
  • discussing schools of thought, analysis levels and explanatory models in psychology and pedagogy (2)

Competence

The student

  • has knowledge of basic concepts in behaviour analysis and how they are applied in practical milieu work (1)
  • is capable of assessing psychological and educational theories from an individual and group perspective (2)
  • understands that different professions use different professional approaches (2)

Teaching and learning methods

The course includes lectures, inter-teaching, self-study, seminar groups with the possibility of supervision by the lecturer, and work on individual assignments based on completed group work.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before a student can receive a final assessment:

  • Participation in teaching activities and group work (2)
  • Participation in teaching activities and supervision (1)

Assessment

Portfolio exam.

Portfolio requirements:

  • Individual written exam, 2 hours, introduction to behaviour analysis (part 101)
  • Individual written exam, 2 hours, introduction to psychology and pedagogy (part 102)

Grading scale

A grade scale with grades from A to E for pass and F for fail is used.
