Introduction
This course provides an introduction to fundamental knowledge in normal psychology and key approaches in pedagogy, as well as mental illness, health care, and treatment methods for the general population and for populations with intellectual disabilities/developmental impairments. An overview of relevant legislation is also included.
The course runs over 6 weeks.

On successful completion of the course, the student has the following learning outcomes classified as knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- can describe different theoretical perspectives in psychology and pedagogy - and how these may interact
- can explain biological, cognitive, socio-emotional, and sociocultural aspects of normal development, as well as factors that may lead to deviations and maladaptive development
- can explain psychiatric comorbidity in individuals with intellectual disabilities
- can account for recognized treatment methods for mental disorders and substance dependence
- can describe legal methodology and legislation concerning professional standards, consent, and the use of coercive measures in the treatment of mental illness/disorders
Skills
The student
- can discuss key explanatory models in psychology and pedagogy and assess the relationships between them
- can evaluate various learning-theoretical and pedagogical approaches
- can reflect on mental illness among individuals with intellectual disabilities
- can apply and base decisions on legislation related to the treatment of mental disorders and substance dependence
General competence
The student has
- a fundamental understanding of the characteristics of scientific psychology and pedagogy
- an overview of the range of theoretical and clinical approaches in modern psychology and pedagogy, both in the general population and in populations with intellectual disabilities
- an understanding of the importance of legal knowledge in the role of a health professional

Individual written exam with invilgation, 4 hours.

Examiners
Each answer is assessed by an internal examiner.
An external examiner is used regularly, and at least for every third completion of the course. When selecting answers for external grading, the selection must include a minimum of 10 per cent of the answers, but in any case not fewer than 5 answers. In the event of exclusion, the external examiner's assessment shall benefit all students.
