Introduction
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge
The student
- has in-depth knowledge about children's physical, mental and social development
- has in-depth knowledge about children's fundamental needs and how complications and developmental damage can be prevented
- has in-depth knowledge of diseases in children, their treatment and any related complications
- has in-depth knowledge of how children express symptoms, pain and anxiety
- has in-depth knowledge about maintaining and restoring vital functions if they are threatened
- has in-depth knowledge about children's experiences, reactions and needs in connection with acute, critical or chronic illness, in a multicultural perspective
- has in-depth knowledge about the experiences, reactions and needs of parents and siblings when a child is acutely, critically or chronically ill, in a multicultural perspective
- is familiar with action alternatives in cases of suspicion of neglect or abuse of children
Skills
The student
- is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories and methods in paediatric nursing
- is capable of observing, assessing and identifying a child's general and special needs, resources and problems
- is capable of preventing complications, infections, traumatic experiences and developmental damage caused by examinations, treatment and hospital stays
- is capable of practising paediatric nursing with respect for children's autonomy, integrity and dignity
- is capable of communicating and interacting in relation to a child's age and developmental stage, the experiences of the child and his/her caregivers/siblings and the situation
- is capable of using knowledge about how children express symptoms, pain and anxiety to map, assess, prevent, treat and relieve children's pain and discomfort
- is capable, with some supervision, of work on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the paediatric nurse's functions and areas of responsibility:
- is capable of planning and implementing measures in order of priority on the basis of the needs and resources of children and their parents
- is capable of assessing acute situations and implementing measures to maintain/restore vital functions
- is capable of looking after the healthy aspects of the child, promoting coping, and maintaining hope, quality of life and meaning

Competence
The student
- is capable, with some supervision, of analysing relevant ethical issues in paediatric nursing based on relevant discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge
- is capable, with some supervision, of critical reflection when making choices and of practising paediatric nursing in accordance with ethical principles and healthcare legislation
- is capable of participating actively in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on patient treatment in accordance with his/her own competence and applicable ethical principles and healthcare legislation
- is capable of benefitting from supervision and demonstrating the ability to reflect on his/her own actions
Required preliminary courses
Simulation and supervised practical training.
Learning outcomes
The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:
- The student's specification of learning outcomes for the course
- The student must submit at least one written assessment per month.

Teaching and learning methods
The assessment is based on the learning outcomes for the course, the student's specification of the learning outcomes and the formative assessment made of the student during the practical training period.
An attendance requirement applies to practical training. In order to pass a practical training course, the student must have attended at least 90% of the planned activities in each course. Students must make up for absence exceeding 10% by agreement with the lecturer and the practical training establishment. If a student¿s absence exceeds 20%, he/she will fail the course. Students who fail a period of practical training must retake the whole training period.
Course requirements
For å kunne framstille seg til eksamen må følgende arbeidskrav være godkjent:
- Arbeidskrav 1: En skriftlig individuell oppgave med et omfang på 1500-2000 ord.
- Arbeidskrav 2: Obligatorisk tilstedeværelse. All undervisning er obligatorisk. Ved fravær over 25 % må det avtales med emneansvarlig om og eventuelt hvordan dette kan kompenseres. Kompenserende arbeidskrav må være godkjent for å kunne framstille seg til eksamen.
Den skriftlige individuelle oppgaven skal være godkjent av emneansvarlig for å kunne framstille seg til eksamen. Dersom oppgaven ikke godkjennes, har studenten rett til å levere den på nytt èn gang innen angitt tidsfrist. Dersom oppgaven igjen ikke blir godkjent, mister studenten retten til å framstille seg til eksamen.
Arbeidskravene må være gjennomført og godkjent innen fastlagt frist for at studenten skal kunne framstille seg til eksamen. Dersom skriftlig arbeidskrav ikke blir godkjent, gis det anledning til å kunne levere en forbedret versjon én gang innen angitt frist.
Assessment
Eksamen i emnet er en individuell skriftlig hjemmeeksamen over en periode på 7 dager. Hjemmeeksamen skal ha et omfang på 4000 ord (+- 10 %). Forside og litteraturliste kommer i tillegg. Skrifttype og skriftstørrelse: Arial / Calibri 12pkt. Linjeavstand: 1,5.
Studenter med gyldig fravær eller som ikke består eksamen har rett til ny/utsatt eksamen som har lik utforming som ordinær. Det vil bli gitt en ny eksamensoppgave. En eventuell ny/utsatt eksamen arrangeres i begynnelsen av høstsemesteret.

Alle hjelpemidler er tillatt så lenge regler for kildehenvisning følges.
Grading scale
BARNPRA20 and MBARNPRA20 overlap 100%.
Academic content is overlapping with BARNPRA2 and MBARNPRA2.
