Course history

Introduction

Candidates must write a paper of 3000 words +/- 10%.

The paper for assessment must be handed in on a digital platform by a specified date. The paper must fulfill source reference and quotation technique requirements. A passed paper is a precondition for being awarded the 5 ECTS credits. If the paper is awarded a fail grade, the candidate can submit a revised paper once, by a specified deadline.

All examination support material is allowed as long as source reference and quotation technique requirements are applied.

Content

The course provides a research-based and cross-disciplinary approach to selected processes of social transformation during the market reforms of India and China since 1991 (India) and 1979 (China) within a comparative framework. It will look into changes of class, caste, migration patterns, gender relations and politics.

Lectures will be organised around the following themes:

  • The modern history of the two countries.
  • The market reforms.
  • Political change.
  • How market reform and political change interact with gender and class relations.

Teaching and learning methods

The essay will be graded by the course lectures.

Assessment

Admission Requirements: The course is offered only to fellows who are admitted to PhD programs or equivalent (such as førstelektorprogram).

  • Internal candidates, please use Studentweb (fsweb.no) and sign up yourself, or contact the PhD administration.

Required attachments:

  • Confirmation of admission to a PhD program, or part of a førstelektorprogram (external applicants).
  • The participants must submit a presentation of their projects, their experiences from action research and practice research. The presentation will form the basis for discussion where active participation will be expected, both in presenting one’s ideas and providing feedback on the ideas of others. The presentations must be written (1-2 pages) and submitted to the coordinators by April 30, 2023. The presentations will be accessible for other students on Canvas

Grading scale

A graded scale from A to E for passed and F for not passed will be used.

Examiners

The exam will be assessed by one internal and one external examiner.

Admission requirements

The programme is aimed at applicants who have a natural science background and wish to take further education in an engineering field. Applicants without a natural science background can apply for admission to the OsloMet’s introductory course or three-semester scheme to qualify for the engineering programmes.
