Course history

Introduction

The students will immerse themselves in the programme option they have chosen by planning and implementing a project on the basis of a topic of their own choice. Students must take responsibility for their own knowledge development, both in terms of theory and skills, by using literature, the programme's academic supervisors and various scientific methods. The exam work must demonstrate that the student is capable of applying his/her knowledge in a professional context, and of critical analysis and assessment of his/her own work to ensure the quality of the product and meet the patient's needs as well as professional and official requirements.

The course consists of the following subjects, with credits specified:

  • Dental prosthetics, fixed/removable 15 sp. ( Theory 7,5 sp and Skills training/practical training  7,5 sp)

Required preliminary courses

All exams in the first and second year of the programme and TANNPRA1A/TANNPRA1B must be passed.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of

  • discussing and demonstrating in-depth knowledge of his/her chosen bachelor's thesis topic 

Skills

The student is capable of

  • applying knowledge of data collection, analysis and discussion in his/her written project work
  • presenting the method, data material and results of his/her own project both orally and in writing
  • producing clinically satisfactory dental technology products and/or tooth replacements
  • applying knowledge of clinical factors and factors relating to laboratory technology that have a bearing on the production of an optimal dental technology Product
  • demonstrating a basic understanding of design with particular consideration for patient habituation and aesthetic requirements from a social perspective

Competence

The student

  • is capable of applying the research of others in his/her own Project
  • demonstrates a professional attitude to research and development work

Teaching and learning methods

The course is taught in the middle of the sixth semester. The work and teaching methods are resource lectures, individual product production in the laboratories, and the writing of a project assignment in groups of two to three students. Students receive individual supervision in relation to the practical work, as well as project supervision in groups.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before the student can take the exam:

  • at least 80% attendance at seminars, scheduled group work, individual practical supervision and project supervision
  • the groups must present their project at one of the seminars. Students who fail to attend must give a presentation of the project to the programme's lecturers.
  • a written peer review of another group's project. The peer review will be submitted both to the group and to the lecturer.

Assessment

  1. In order to take the exam, the compulsory attendance requirements must be met, and all exams up to and including TANNPRA1A/TANNPRA2B must be passed.

Assessment content: The learning outcomes

Exam form: The exam consists of three parts:

  1. A project assignment of 7,000-9,000 words in groups of two to three students
  2. Individual practical work:
  3. Individual oral exam, up to 20 minutes

Resit exam: The student must retake the part(s) of the exam that he/she failed. In such cases, the project assignments and practical assignments must be reworked.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Separate grades are awarded for each of the three parts: 1) project assignment, 2) practical work, and 3) oral exam.

 

The written and practical parts must be passed (A-E) in order for the student to take the oral exam. A pass grade (A-E) must also be awarded for the oral exam in order for the student to pass.

 

The final grade is based on the following weighting of the parts of the exam: Project report 40%, dental technology products 40%, and oral exam 20%.

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner will assess all exams.
