Course history

Introduction

The course Dental Morphology provides knowledge of the macroscopic anatomy and manual design of teeth. Through case studies and introductory work processes related to prosthetics, the dental technician’s need for morphological knowledge is introduced.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The student can

  • explain teeth's macroscopic anatomy, anatomical variations and dental nomenclature

  • recognise and describe the individual teeth in the permanent dentition

 

Skills

The student can

  • use correct terminology when referring to teeth, tooth surfaces, anatomical structures, directions and planes, both in writing and orally

  • illustrate the morphological shape of teeth using form language and sketches

  • make functional work models for fixed prosthetics

  • recreate a fully anatomical wax crown with adequate recognisable morphology

Teaching and learning methods

The work and teaching methods vary between demonstration lectures, self-study, seminars and skills training. The flipped classroom method is used for parts of the course. Digital learning resources will be made available for the students in advance. Student work comprises written and practical assignments, individually or in groups. In seminars, subject matter can be presented by students and lecturers for discussion.

Course requirements

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:

  • a minimum attendance of 90% at demonstration lectures

  • a minimum attendance of 80% in skills training, seminars and group work

  • two illustrations and/or written assignments (in total 700 words)

  • three practical assignments in accordance with set criteria (work corresponding five laboratory days)

Individual oral exam, up to 20 minutes

Examiners

The oral exam will be assessed by two internal examiners.
