  • Introduction

    In this course, you will strengthen your competence in delivering person-centred, evidence-based nursing. The course builds on the foundations of nursing and the natural science subjects from the first year of study. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is emphasised as a key basis for nursing decision-making processes. You will also be introduced to philosophy of science and research methods. Throughout the course, you will develop the ability for critical reflection and to make professionally and ethically grounded decisions in nursing practice.

  • Required preliminary courses

    To start this course, you must have passed:

    • SYKP/SYKP1010 Foundations of Nursing 1, 15 credits.
    • SYKK/SYKP1110 Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, 15 credits.
    • SYKK/SYKPPRA10 Foundations of Nursing 2, 15 credits.

    or equivalent.*

    * For year group 2023 at OsloMet, the equivalent is:

    • Approved work requirements from SYKK/SYKP1300 Pharmacology and Drug Administration, 5 credits.

    Passed course:

    • SYKP/SYKP1000 Theoretical Foundations of Nursing/Foundations of Nursing 1, 13 credits.
    • SYKK/SYKP1100 Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, 12 credits.
    • SYKK/SYKP1200 Microbiology and Infection Control, 5 credits.

  • Learning outcomes

    On successful completion of the course, the student has acquired the following learning outcomes classified as knowledge, skills, and general competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • can explain person-centered nursing for children and adults
    • can describe how the nurse can attend to the psychosocial needs of children and adolescents at different developmental stages
    • can describe possible psychosocial reactions to illness
    • can describe mental health problems and substance use issues in adults
    • can describe how the nurse can help promote patients’ hope and coping
    • can define what evidence-based practice (EBP) is and is familiar with the rationale for EBP and shared decision-making
    • has knowledge of philosophy of science and research methods
    • can explain different types of studies and the characteristics of different research questions and scientific articles, and describe how evidence is situated within the evidence pyramid
    • can describe the concepts of informed consent, patient participation, and decision-making capacity, and their significance in healthcare
    • has knowledge of general research ethics values and principles in health research

    Skills

    The student can

    • apply knowledge of person-centered nursing to to discuss and reflect on health challenges and complex patient situations
    • identify, prevent, and resolve conflicts of values and interests in meetings with patients, relatives and other cooperating parties
    • describe methods for collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data
    • develop a relevant search strategy for a nursing professional/clinical question and conduct the search for summarised knowledge (from the top of the knowledge pyramid)
    • critically evaluate health claims in the media

    General competence

    The student can

    • apply evidence-based practice in person-centred nursing and critically reflect on professional and ethical decisions
  • Teaching and learning methods

    Lectures, group work, teaching programs from the University Library, seminars with presentations and self-study.

  • Course requirements

    The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:

    • 80 % attendance of timetabled activity marked.
    • Group assignment, 3-5 students, scope of 1,200 words (+/- 10 %) with a chosen problem to the course's theme.
  • Assessment

    Supervised individual written exam.

    • 5 hours.
  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    None.

  • Grading scale

    Grade scale A-F.

  • Examiners

    All answers are assessed by two examiners.

    An external examiner is used regularly, at a minimum for every third ordinary examination. If selecting answers for external evaluation, a minimum of 10 percent of the answers shall be included, with no fewer than 10 answers. The external examiner’s assessment shall form the basis for the assessment of the remaining answers.
