Required preliminary courses

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of

  • differentiating between different types of microorganisms
  • differentiating between the structure and characteristics of different types of microorganisms
  • describing how different microorganisms influence health and disease
  • explaining basic infection control procedures in the health services
  • describing the content of the Act Relating to the Control of Communicable Diseases and relevant regulations
  • describing the consequences of overconsumption of antibiotics and preventive measures to avoid antibiotic resistance
  • describing the infection control measures to be implemented when isolating patients

Skills

The student is capable of

  • breaking the chain of infection and preventing the spread of unwanted microbes
  • using knowledge of basic infection control procedures in the health services
  • performing hand hygiene in accordance with the applicable guidelines

Competence

The student

  • has a basic understanding of the nurse’s preventive function in infection control and hygiene in the health and care services

Learning outcomes

Self-study, lectures, digital learning resources, seminars, simulation and skills training

The flipped classroom is used as a teaching method for part of the course. Digital learning resources will be made available in advance.

Examiners

Two examiners will assess the exams. At least 10% of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner. The external examiner’s assessment shall benefit all students.
